Question Xtra Cab VS. Normal Cab

Are there any performance differences between the Xtra and Normal Cab 2nd Gen Toyota Trucks?

I am really tall, and might be able to use some of the spare room from the Xtra cab to my advantage, but I don't want to sacrifice any performance.

Any input is appreciated!

Thanks!

Go X-tra Cab for sure if you're tall! I had an 85 regular cab and it was OK but never seemed like I had enough room for recovery gear inside the cab.

while the extra space in the extra-cab is nice you also have a longer wheel base, so depending what you use your truck for you have to take both into consideration. I hunt alot, man i sure could use the space those days, but when it comes to hill climbs and the such i love the shorter wheel base of my truck.

Shortbed wheelbase is 103", Xtra cab wheel base is 112".
I wheeled my '84 xtra cab for 4 years, it never really left me thinking the wheel base was too long. I loved the extra room in there for keeping stuff dry and actually being able to recline the seats was great. If you can find an xtra cab that is the route I would go...

I don't know anyone that ever had an extended cab that wished they had a regular, while nearly everone with a regular cab wishes thay had an extended, especially tall fellers.

There is the two piece drive line issue and subsequent center support bearing problems with extended cabs but that is a minor weak spot that can easily be dealt with. Its only like an extra what, 10 inches? But it sure seems like it gives you alot of extra room for storage and expansion.

The longer wheel base in the extracab will give you a smoother less pitch-y ride on the road, but may slightly increase your chance of being high-centred when off-roading. The xtra cab is very slightly heavier than the normal cab but you'd never really notice it driving/mpg wise. I'd say get the xtra cab I had a normal cab and there was never enough room inside, and I'm not that tall.

also depending on what your doing with it you could alsways shorten the wheelbase and still keep the xtra cab you will just have a small bed.

Mine is an '85 regular cab. We removed the back of the cab to allow the fabrication of the 4 seater truggy. We also extended the wheelbase to 112", which I prefer. My vote would be to go for the extended cab, it's WAY nicer to have extra legroom and interior storage. Besides, you're looking for a change it's pretty simple to shorten the wheelbase and/or bob the bed.

I was thinking I might take the bed off, and throw a roll cage in there

At 6'6" I'll tell ya the xcab still aint big enough. Just swapped seats and the new ones are lower, so plenty of head room, but the knee's are way bent. Gonna fab new mounts to pull the seat back some more but then the arm out the window thing will suck. But I still love this little truck!! No way are ya gonna be happy with a regular cab, I'm thinkin.
Just my .02

I would prefer the xtra cab, but since mines a regular, the regulars look better.

well, I much prefer an Xtra Cab for all practical purposes, but for looks, def a standard cab.

I'll tell you what, that extra space behind the seats is great. I couldn't imagine a standard cab, I have the back seat stacked full of tools and such haha. plus, I'm taller and bigger, and that extra space is sooo nice. I never feel cramped in that truck, plus lots of headroom to go around. and in a pinch, being able to haul 4 or 5 people is really nice, convenience wise, but rather cramped...

go Xtra cab if you can deal with the extra 10 inches of wheel base. drive shafts aren't of too much concern, they last a long time. and you will find the extra space to be more of an advantage many times more than you will find a 10 inch shorter wheel base. and I agree that the Xtra cabs ride nicer, I own both, similar trucks, same suspension, and the Xtra rides like a dream, the Standard cab leaves just a little bit to desire, not much though.

good luck and happy hunting!

Old post but new question. My 91 extra is at 122. Maybe its just me, but it feels very side tippy. Is it the wb causing this because of a rectangular stance vs. square or is it stiff ifs? I have an 85 sfa ready and I am building a front 3 & rear 4 link. Plans are to run between 37 to 40s. Should I shorten the wb or will the new suspension make it more stable?
