Wont Idle

Hello, new member with an 84 22r. Had a rebuilt engine installed a few years ago and have not had any problems passing smog since. It is my daily driver and has been driving fine. One day I start the engine, let it warm up and as I'm going down the road it started running rough, and when coming to a stop it stalled. Since then when it starts it dies at idle, if I give it a lot of gas it will stay running, but rough. I've done some searching on this and have replaced the fuel filter, and tested the EGR. I was told carbon build up to the EGR could cause this, but as I said the engine is fairly new with less than 12k miles on it. I'm starting to think it could be the carburetor. I've done some searches on a few forum and find similar situations but nothing like this any thoughts or advice are welcome.

EGR is a simple enough system to eliminate as a cause, cut a block off "plate" from a tin can and put it over the port.. If it suddenly runs correct it's an EGR problem.

Not likely an EGR problem given the symptoms, it would smooth out at higher rpms if the EGR was stuck open.

Thanks for the advice. I cut some tin, covered the port and it still dies at idle. Bummed it won't stay running, but like that a part has been ruled out.

I'm having the same problem on my 85 22r. But mine will run if the choke is closed.

I've been struggling with this one myself. First rule out carb problems (clogged jet, clogged filter), then check valve lash. If exhaust valves are real tight, that could be causing your idle problem, the underlying problem could be a lean condition frying the valves.

Did the vavles. checked egr. Check compression. New fuel pump. Going to try different carburetor this weekend and see how that does. Changed card cause choke was not working
