'90 Rebuilt 22RE EGR Code 71 Rough Idle/Dieing
The title more or less sums it up but specifics are-
I'm running a rebuilt 22RE. The first 200 miles or so I wasn't running EGR due to potential problems. Now I've got it hooked up again and symptoms are-
-Immediately after start it runs really rough for 20 - 30 seconds, after which it smooths out and holds a good high idle.
-After it warms up it runs really rough and dies a lot at idle. This is seems somewhat like the dashpot issue.. If I come to a stop and baby it with the throttle a bit it will eventually idle just fine
-CEL comes on at times and sometimes it's off. It's code 71 for EGR
Anyone have idea what could cause this? Think two of the vacuum hoses got switched? Was very careful that they went on correctly but definitely possible that I made a mistake there.
TIA

Glad you got it fixed, but luckily I can safely rule that out in my case!
I have a new timing set and valves were adjusted to spec when the engine went in two weeks ago. Before I hooked up the EGR it was running fine.
This definitely is EGR, VSV, EGR "UFO" related.. Sadly I don't fully understand the system or I would have a better idea where to start. A friend recommends cleaning out the VSV and EGR "UFO"
FWIW all of those components sat for six months when the engine was at the machine shop so maybe they picked up some extra crud?

Fixed it.
So others can learn from my mistake... It ended up being two switched vacuum lines so the EGR was running all the time instead of only at cruise. That was it.
The hood diagram is good but it can be a little confusing. The vac hard line to the EGR valve and the "EGR UFO" are the same and it connects to one of the VSVs. The horizontal line has two vertical lines that come off of it going up. So both of those should come off of the vertical lines.
If you are having trouble tracing the hard lines hook up a vacuum pump to one end.
