What to look for once the head is removed.
Hello all! I just pulled the head from my 85 22r. What should I look for when inspecting for problems on the head and block? I am taking the head to a machine shop asap to have it looked over but I want to clean it up and inspect it myself first.
Thanks

I pulled the head because a bunch of coolant steam was shooting out of the exhaust and it started to heat up. When I pulled the head off the #2 and #3 cylinders had coolant on top of the pistons. Someone had already done a new HG at some point, but who knows when, and if they fixed anything but the gasket. I don't like to leave anything to chance so I am doing the whole top end and the rear main seal(it is also leaking). This is my first job of this magnitude and I am doing it alone so I am very apprehensive and like to ask for the advice of the experienced yota sage's. I am also going to do a timing chain replacement so I can see what is going on in there.
Any and all advice is totally appreciated.

I got the head cleaned up and noticed the #3 and #4 valves are very dirty compared to the 1 and 2. I also noticed on the #3 cylinder head area there is a little chunk of metal missing on the edge in between the piston top outline and a little channel. Any ideas? Is the head shot? I have a picture but I don't know how to post it up.
