water pump replacment

Went to my mechanic today for my inspection and he said that my water pump needs to be replaced. He also said that I need a new slave cylinder becuase it's leaking and valve cover gasket. So he's going to do the following for about $490.

water pump
coolant flush
thermostat
valve cover gasket
slave cylinder
belt

What do you guys think? I'm thinking I can do the water pump myself.

NOt really a bad price for all the parts and labor on that.

But if you are mechanically inclined, i would do it yourself. Its all easy stuff, the hardest part is draining and removing the radiator, and all the belts etc to do the water pump.

However, shops often have equipment far superior to what Joe Blow has for flushing a system. Sorta 6 of one, half dozen of another.

You can buy all the parts for about 170 dollars, and if you can do it your self you can save about 300 dollars. like said above, its all easy stuff to do and you could have it all done in one day.

If you're doing the slave cylinder I would do the clutch master cylinder as well, especially if it's still original. Proabbaly would add $50-75 to the price but it always seems when you only do one cylinder on the clutch system the other one goes soon after.
And if you think you can do the water pump yourself then the other stuff should be even easier.

I was an F/18 mechanic and found that it was easier to work on than removing the water pump, the belts, fan, timing belt which should be replaced, and timing belt tensioner, it became a a bigger job than what I thought I could do, I paid 450 for my to get replaced and I brought them the parts. your getting a deal. in my opinion. Oh and if you do decide to do the job your self, read read read about it. and make sure that you have metric tools.

that stuff is easy, i just replaced my water pump and belts yesturday, the only hard part was scraping the old gasket off, becuase of the odd position and gettting the fan on and off can be a bitch unless you have small hands.

Download FSM? What do you mean?

Also, where do you guys recommend getting the parts? I looked on engnbdr for the water pump, and maybe I'm retarded but I couldn't find anything on a water pump part.

Yeah, by the way, he said there was no need to do the timing chain. I have 116K miles and he said the timing chains usually last a long time. I mentioned about the plastic guides and he said if they start to go you'll hear a change in the sound of the engine when it's running.

So I changed my water pump for 30$... I bought the pump, at autozone, and changed it, stop being a wussy and DIY. Oh and 490$ is a total ripoff, you could prolly do everything you said for like under 300$ EASY.

$300 is high for all those parts, at the most id say it would be around $150 for all the parts, plus if you do it yourself, you'll know how to replace those parts in the future. since im sure your gona have to replace the belts, thermostat and posibly the water pump again.
