After fire is the cause of a muffler explosion. Back fire blows your air filter up.
in the FSM it also states that it can be the fuel cut solenoid or the choke.

Muffler Explosion

I have seen this happen before when a baffle in the muffler comes loose and blocks the outlet of the muffler ................and yes the plump potato in the tailpipe could do this also hehe .

What about little gremlins who go around pouring fuel into the mufflers of parked cars? We can't rule them out then, can we?
