transmission noise

hey guys im pretty new to the whole toyota world haha i just recently got an 85 pickup 4x4 5 spd with the 22r carb motor and the transmission is making some ticking/clunking sounds. you can hear it just slightly at start up(have to know what your listening for) and it gets louder as it warms up. as soon as i press the clutch in the sounds goes away so i was thinking it could possibly be the throw out bearing but it also makes a bunch of noise while im driving as well as when the transmission is under pressure. ie: if i get on the pedal the noise just gets worse. it is much worse in the lower gears and makes almost no noise in 5th gear. i can also feel the clunking/ticking in the shifter. if any of you guys have any ideas it would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

Could be the clutch disc is bad. The springs that absorb the initial engagement may be bad, causing the noise while under engine force. Just thinking out loud here...

Check your driveshaft unless you are positive it is in the tranny. I had identical symptoms and it turns out my u-joints were about ready to pop out.

When I did my 5spd swap years ago thats how my tranny was. At idle the throw out bearing would whine, push in the clutch and it would go away.

It would get loud when driving and go away in 5th. Thats just a common Toyota tranny bearing issue when they are getting worn out.

Even though mine shifted fine I had it rebuilt using a Marlin rebuild kit. That was back in '04 and have had no issues since.

As long as you can still shift fine and don't mind the noise then keep on truckin. I just can't stand that sort of thing.

I pulled the trans out of trucks before and found parts and chunks getting tossed around. Mostly some spring tips and pad material.
