My transfer case is slinging oil at the rear drive shaft yoke seal. Can That seal be replaced without droping the transfer?

Hey guy's, its been awhile but I believe you are in luck! Just drop the drive shaft, unbolt the yoke, pull it out, and you are at the seal. Good luck!

 

Hells yeah! that's what I like to hear. Gotta get me a seal and gasket now!

 

worst case, you might want to pull the cover off to put the seal in. Easier to get the seal in that way. Be carefull! The cover is thin and wont take alot of pounding!

I'm gonna replace the seal and get a new gasket for the cover. Where would you recommend getting these two item?

Would you put any permatex on the cover with the gasket when putting it back together?

 

I like the gray permatex, seems to hold up better. and as far as where to go, either the stealership or autozone. When you put the seal in, grease the lip before putting the yoke back it.

It's good to see a process so when anyone else goes to do it they know what or what not to take off or out.

This seal is also on my list of to-do's. If its not an oil pan leak, its a rear output shaft seal leak!! Any pics would help. I have read in other posts you should buy a replacement nut??

Ha ha... I went to the parts store to get the seal and he didn't know which one it was. I said the rear output shaft seal and he read off like 5 different ones. I wasn't able to get the parts for it yet. I said I'd have to find out more so I can get the right one. So any more help on how to correctly identify the seal would be great. I do not think there is much play or any at all in the drive shaft there. I'd have to check again, but I think I remember checking a little while back.

I'm not sure how else oil would be getting on the drive shaft. It's a ways away from really anything else.

 

Man I feel your pain! They hire some real winners at those parts stores sometimes. Theres now other way to describe it! Its the rear output shaft seal on the transfer case. Maybe go in when someone else is workn

 

I've found that Napa is the only place for the more specific items we often need. They have been the only place I've gotten things like inner axle seals, and brake line fittings. I try to avoid the generic discount auto parts stores when I can.

 

i just did mine last week just drop the driveshaft and pull the yoke and thats it
