Tranny speedo gear replacement type?
Hey Guys,
I have an 85 5 speed 4x4 pickup that stripped the speedometer gear and haven't had any luck finding a replacement. The dealer is a waste of time..they don't want to fool with it as they say there are a few types and don't want to order the wrong one.
What do I look for to find a replacement for the stock gear? Are there different colors or do I need to count teeth?
I didn't think it would be so difficult....
Thanks!!
Dave

My dad tells me you used to be able to go to a transmission shop and tell them what kind of truck, gear ratios, and current-size tires. From there they could pick you out the right speedo gear.
So my friend Drew gets 33's on his 4:10 82 truck, goes to the tranny shop and talks speedo gears, and the guys says: "What the Hell are you talking about"?
...So much for experienced help. I hate shop owners that look down on shade tree mechanics. Its college classes for every ****ing job nowadays.

I'm just looking for a replacement at this point. Tried Downey and others with no luck. Is it the same as other models are unique to the 85 4x4? Any help appreciated!!

A couple of questions, if you don't mind...
Which "speedometer gear" are you talking about? Underneath or Dash?
edit: OK, I looked closer: the OP said "Tranny" gear!
Have you removed the "stripped" one from your truck? (You could do a side-by-side if someone whips out a possible swap...)
Have you ID'ed your tranny/transfer? It might make a difference...
Could you complete your Profile? It helps in many ways. Regional stuff like dirt on local parts, for instance.
Good Luck

Carbbed 22R should have a G52 or G54 transmission.
EFI 22R supposedly used the W56. Shouldn't matter wither way, I think they were all rated at the same gear ratios, just improved strenth.
And a 5 speed 22R(E) 4x4 should have a 4:10 rear gear ratio.
