Anybody out there towing a camping trailer with their 4cyl pickup? I'm looking to get an '85ish truck and wondering what size camping trailer it might tow. Thanks!

 

If it is a 22r like mine. I would say NONE!

 

I tow a 12 ft pop up pretty easily with my 22re, as long as there are not many hills

 

That bad! Maybe I should look at something with a little more umph

they have problems towing their own weight up hill... I wouldn't suggest it.

 

Partially depends upon how the truck is set up. If it has lower axle gears, you should be able to tow a small pop up. I just installed 5.29s and am running 33s, but have not broken them in enough or had the chance to tow yet. I tow an 18'6" Ski boat (only on relatively flat land so far tho). With stock 4.10s and 31" tires, it was slow, but it got there. With 4.10s and 33's, it was Terrible, but it still got there. I'm interested to see how it does with the 5.29s. I'm WAY under geared with them and the 33s. So towing shouldn't be an issue.
31's with 4.88 axle gears would probably be a good combination. . .

My two cents would be that anything 1000 lbs and under, like a popup, you'd be fine. I'll caveat and say that would be fine if you have 31s or smaller under the truck.

Just don't epxect 0-60 in well, 2 or 3 minutes. :-)

 

Thinking about it, If you look at the Owner's Manual, I believe it says 5,500lbs GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) which includes the Truck and the cargo/trailer. My truck weighed in at about 3,500 +/-, the last time I put it on a scale, but I've also added gear, a winch and heavy bumper and sliders since then. So probably 3,700-3,800 easy. Meaning I can only "Safely" within specs tow 1,200 or so.

 

not much, as mentioned below 3K, 2K probably better..good brakes on both truck and trailer (whether they are surge-electric brake control would be better) class 3 hitch (2" reciever) forgoet a bumper mounted ball...
I would suggest a bigger truck/suv for a tow rig...

It's a pretty cool concept and would be neat to build/have. I don't know what the eventual weight is going to be, but a 4cylinder Yota should be able to pull it.

 

I'm at ~ 4800 GVW combined .. fully loaded .. stock gears , 31's 22RE .
running up the switch backs on the mountian I had to run in 2nd gear .. but hey , like all other campers , I was in no hurry . on the flats and gravel , not a problem .. I believe the key to success in towing , is excellent brakes and cooling system .. and I always keep both of those in top notch condition .

That's awesome! I found a little trailer locally that I might buy, it can't weigh more than 900lbs so it should work.
