Steering Noise

When I turn the wheel of my 84 it makes a thump thump thump noise. It's not like the thump of a CV joint (duh) where it continues to thump as the vehicle moves through a turn. The noise occurs when I actually turn the wheel and when I turn it back to straight. Anybody have any suggestions? The front end is pretty much stock, no change in steering components or axle set up.

Maybe your kingpin bearings are giving up the ghost? Bearing races could be grooved thus making it like a ratchet.....

Just an idea...
