Sounds like it's starved for fuel since it wouldn't run at all if it didn't have spark or air.

Is the fuel pump running? Do you have pressure on the rails? The "takes a few times cranking, then fires right up" sounds like it's havign problems getting fuel, then it gets enough to spurt, and once that's gone, it'll stop.

Hmmm.. I can see the open header angle, but I know folks that have installed headers and then driven to an exhaust shop - just like you're looking to do. Mine runs without an O2 sensor - it runs lousy, but it runs.

Didn't see a previous mention of a fuel leak, but yeah, that would seem to say it's not fuel based.

What about the MAF (or the equivilent that you guys have)? I know that mine won't start at all with the MAF disconnected, but I I've had experiences where I know that there's a threshold where it will run crappy when there's unmetered air getting into the system. Our engines & ECUs are different of course, but this is a matter of straight-forward engine physics.

Can you keep it running if you jump on the throttle? Or feather it back & forth?

I have never had a car with this engine,
Is there no chance that you messed up the spark plugs ( firing order ) or that you need to adjust the ignation ?
