Some fairly generic question on 22r motor, clutch/flywheel install

So i've got a new motor that I'm dropping in the 84 4runner, but I'm installing a new clutch and flywheel. I got a clutch from wabfab (the oem one) and the flywheel from napa. I've never done a clutch or flywheel before. Any tips or advice on this? I do have the fsm and have looked at it for the clutch replacement.

I've also got a photo here and it's different than my 22r head (20r head). Not quite sure what goes here? Looks like the water temp is on the radiator hose connection that you can see in the photo. Any ideas? I'm sure I'll have a couple more questions along the way as well. I'll post up photos of the whole project once I get some more time and get it driving again.

Not hard to do the flywheel.
Just 6 bolts.
Tighten down in a crisscross, then snug to factory specs.
Same with the clutch, except use the alignment tool you're supposed to get with it, and go from there.

Thanks for the input. Any suggestions on what goes in the empty spot in the photo?

You're from spokane? I'm just in Medical Lake. Nice to see a local.

empty holes

I believe that hole is for a vacum source, power brakes etc. I cannot tell from the pic if it is where coolant flows or not. If coolant does flow there, it is for a temp operated switch, of what funtion would only be a guess. That's a weber style intake I'm not as familiar with.

Watch out for those empty holes. The last yota I replaced an engine in (purchased as a basket case w/new engine in the bed) had an empty hole on the back side of the block... It was an oil galley plug. The rebuilder did not put the plug back in, I should have noticed it, and ended up having to remove the transmission to find this mysterious "oil dump."

Take your time, to look over and double check everything, especially if this engine was sourced, ie you did not build it yourself. You might save yourself some time.

I've seen the engine run and work. It has about 10k on it and I've gone through the entire thing and cleaned it up and threw on my weber with a new attachment plate and all. The engine should be solid. Should be that is. Anyways, I appreciate the advice and will do a double check on that. I'm just waiting on my clutch to get here and it will be put into the truck as soon as that happens.

I think I may look for an old fsm, pre-84 so it has this info in it. I'm kinda curious.

Ok.... so I took a closer look at it to answer the question of if it was a water passageway or not. It definitely is. I can see the thermostat through the hole. I think I'm going to find a plug that will close it off until I determine if I need it or now.

Any have any ideas on what size it may be? Maybe 3/8 npt would work as a plug.

missing plug

Yeah, I looked at an old intake this afternoon and it is just plugged off. I'm not sure of the size, but If you run into a road block I can send you the plug out of the intake I have. I'm on the Right coast, so it won't come swiftly... Just let me know.

BTW, as a side note, I really appreciate the mood of this forum. There's not as much trash talk, which can get downright silly. It seems that there are not as many people here who think that they need to prove something, and tap some keys on their computer. So, a great big Thank You to all the guys who keep this place going.

Rant Over.

For Now.

ha ha... I'd agree with you on that. I've learned pretty much all I know about working on cars/trucks from this place. I think I can get a plug for it, but if all else fails I'll let you know. Thanks for the offer.

another quick question. What is this? It looks like another water way connection, but to what? If that is it. There are the two hard pipes that come out of the "back" of the timing chain covers that go into and out of the heater core. Am I missing something?

There are two for the heater core and two for the radiator (very obvious).

EDIT: for those just catchin up, it i a 22r block w/a 20r head.
