Removal of entire AC system in 84 4runner

What do you guys think about this? Will this be something I regret in the future? Right now I don't even know if it work because there is no button on my dash for it, but I'm assuming I have an AC system because I have the extra pulley on the passenger side of the engine off the crank pulley.

I was thinking of removing it. It'll take a little weight off the vehicle and also less power being taken from the crank.

Any opinions/suggestion?

Also if I were to remove it. Is there anything I should watch for or simply remove all of it's components and call it a day?

Leave it in, you can convert the ac compressor into an OBA compressor.

I think I'm in the same boat as you are....all my ac stuff is still in my truck but there's a shorter belt cause the ac pump is not hooked up, anyways I'm taking all the ac stuff out because even if you convert the ac to a air pump
it's a old system that will just cause you problems...take it out my 2ct.

The weight of the AC compressor system is negligible. I typically disconnect, or remove the belt and leave the components in place for the day that I inevitably change my mind about the issue.

Have you had this truck for a while without AC? Guess it depends on what your summers are like (don't know where you live), and if you only drive off road with the windows down. Some people never use AC with the old 22R because of power suck, so it also depends on what you use your truck for.

I have a stock 84 Runner with AC running R12 and it works great. I live in AZ low desert, so there is no way I'm taking my AC unit out!

What is the extra pulley? Is there actually an A/C compressor mounted? It could just be the air pump down below...

But in the event that you DO have A.C...

As a young guy (22) I'm young enough to "stick it out" without the A/C. So I did remove everything short of the evaporator beneath the dash and the harness, BUT I do have all of the under-hood components stored in a fax paper box in my shed next to the condensor grille. Just in case.

The only reason I decided this is because I built my 4Runner from a truck frame specifically for the removable top feature. If I still had the pickup truck setup, the A/C would be isntalled and ready for the summer. Plus, I have crap junkyard seats, so I'll pour a bottle of water over myself on roadtrips and not give a ladybug

The triangular vent windows are a plus.

THANKS! Many states are starting to do something along the same line as Arizona. Maybe some day........

As for live4soccer7 question: I drove a '75 Land Cruiser for years w/out AC but now that I'm a geezer I like AC! AC or not, it's a Yota--drive it!
