Re-Gearing Front Axle, What does it take to remove the Front Dif?

I've been browsing around for a while and am not finding any good information or write ups on removing and re-installing the front diff in an '85 Truck. I am looking to regear both ends, but would like to have a better idea what I'm getting into with the front axle.

I have changed the rear diff, it's relatively easy. But I'm not sure of what it will take to remove the front diff, so I can re-gear it. I'm also looking for suggestions of parts that I should replace while I already have it torn apart? IE. Felt seals on knuckles and other seals?
Will I be far enough in to be able to replace the felt seals on the knuckles? Do I have to go much further to be able to do so?

Thanks,
Grant

You just need to remove the hubs so you can pull the axles out far enough to pull the diff. Then you just need to remove the diff. I would recommend the knuckle rebuild while you are at it...you have it mostly apart.

You can do it without pulling the hubs apart. Remove all 8 nuts that hold the steering arms and trunion bearings in. Then if your brake lines are long enough you can slide the whole hub, and brakes off the axle far enough to pull the third. If you havent put new trunion bearings or seals in the axle definatly get the kit. Its $75 through Sky.

If you get the kit just go through everything though. Clean, inspect and replace seals on everything.

I got the knuckle rebuild kit and the axle truss from sky for $125 with shipping. Well worth it. You will need the gaskets anyway.

Take the front axle apart ONCE and replace anything that is suspect or 23 years old and a wear part, such as what is in a knuckle service kit, especially new axle oil seals. Now is the time to do all your front axle upgrades and be done with it IMO.

Make sure to mark your front d shaft for alignment when you put it back on.

We have everything you need or want on the website.

Get the kit through Marlin with the new heavy duty seals they'll never leak again!
