If you have the cam off 180 the valves will not hit, but your ignition timing and fuel injection will be off for the cylinders now on TDC compression.
If the pistons do hit the valves will it cause a journal to break?

Just read your thread....DAMN that's messy! Hope it goes smooth. I'd get a head with cam/valves already isntalled from ENGNBLDR if I were in your shoes.

Good luck!

Yeh, did the cam cap cause the chain to break or the other way round?
Its not going to lift the cam and break the cap, because the rocker ends are on top of the cam, but
I guess it could put a side load on the cam. Those cam caps are whimpy and it does look like freash break. I would check out your other cam journels for oil starvation, the scoring on the cam could have been caused by the small pieces in the photo or oil starvation.

Nope Not married LOL!!!!!! Trucks good

Well trucks running good. The only issue i noticed is a oil leak from where the head meets the TC cover. I didnt pull the head so the gasket got chewed up a bit when i put the cover back on. Ya gotta be carefull not to do that LOL!!!! If ya got the head off thats a perfect time to do the TC so as to not mess up the gasket.
Im in NY so i'll probably wait till spring and do a new head gasket to fix the leak. I dont like leaks. Right now im trying to get some heat in the truck. The old owner put in a really cold thermostat because the truck was getting too hot but it really was a clogged radiator which i replaced. so the truck never really warms up enough to give any heat.
Im thinking of sticking a piece of cardboard over the grill to at least be able to defrost the window while driving LOL!! Its hard to scrape the ice off while driving LOL!! it refreezes as i drive.
Ive found that on a 6 hour drive those toe and hand warmers are really really nice LOL!!!!
Ps: I also butcher deer and cows for extra money, Yikes LOL!!!. Still wanna get married?? LMAO!!!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Get out your 19mm socket, put it on a breaker bar then put it on the crankshaft pulley bolt and rotate the crank until it is at top dead center 0! If you are not sure pull the #1 spark plug. Get a flashlight and have your buddy turn the crank again and again until (you with your flashlight) can see the piston in the #1 hole and the crank is at 0. Not 5 or 8 but 0! Then go back up to the top of the head where the cam is and look at the cam and make sure the pin on the cam is exactly at 12 o'clock and the pin lines up with the arrow on the rocker arm assembley. Doesn't matter where the damn bright colored link on the chain is as long as you haven't moved off of TDC. If the pin on the cam corresponds (is lined up) with the arrow on the rocker arm and you are at TDC its all good (not interfering.)
That pin needs to line up with the arrow on the rocker arm assembly!
In this photo you can see that the pin (cam) is NOT lined up with the arrow. Some would say "you are off a tooth." Take a pair of channel locks or something similar turn the cam until that $#@* is lined up and carefully put the chain back on!

I read through that whole post and really don't see how that was caused by a the piston hitting a valve. More likely that something clogged the oil gully to starve that journal. After all the journal broke in the wrong direction.

I was wrong about the valve interference, just luck I didn't bend a valve.

Op. FYI girls that wrench are HOT!!! congrats on getting the truck running.

Someone went under the valve cover before I obtained my truck. My current theory is that someone loosened the head bolts and didn't re-torque/tighten properly. The head then warped, putting the center cam/journal in contact. Sound plausible?

Last post on that here, sorry to hijack your thread, 'bug.
