In order to get the cam gear and chain back on, you'll need a long screwdriver or something similar to compress the chain tensioner. Make sure that you have some tension on the chain so that the chain doesn't slip off the lower sleeve gear, otherwise, you may have to take the cover off again. If everything lines up correctly, at TDC, the cam gear mark will be aligned slightly to the left as you look at it head on.

Good Luck.

A Frugal Method...

I'm leery of aftermarket and "rebuilt" heads. I like OEM heads!

I can get them at the local Pick-n-Pull for about $60, including rocker arm assembly. I try to find clean, non-fried ones. I inspect them carefully and check the valve seating by pouring solvent in the intake and exhaust ports. I've had VERY good luck.

I clean them up and use $35 (incl S/H) ebay gasket sets. Total out-of-pocket less than $100! A Timing chain set adds about $40. An OEM timing chain cover is about $20 at Pick-n-Pull, if needed. NO machine $hop! By using the rocker arm assembly with the "new" head, the valves need only minimal adjustments.

I've done this to several 22R/RE's with excellent results.

Thanks for the advice jeff. I was going to get one of the rebuilt ones, but I really dont want to spend a bunch of money on the head and use my old rockers. I wouldn't be able to afford the head, new rockers, gaskets. I just lost my job on friday. Sucks, but all I can do is move forward. Unfortunatly, 22re's are kinda hard to find around here. The ones that I have seen in the salvage yard are toast. I may try dirtyboy. He's here on yotatech and can get me head, cam, and rockers all together for pretty cheap. Everyone has had great things to say about his stuff.

Remember, all 1985-1995 22R and 22RE heads, rockers and cams are identical, including Celica's.

So there are, in fact, a lot of heads out there, that will fit your truck. It may be just a matter of locating one.

And, imho: It costs too much to be shipping heads. (I'm guessing ~$40.)

I clean the bolt holes with solvent and blow them out with air. I chase the head bolts by placing them in a vice and running an appropriate size nut on the threads. I usually need to replace a couple of the head bolts (Pick-n-Pull - $1/each). I clean and scrape the head and block gasket surfaces and wipe them down with acetone (NO oil or grease on these surfaces!).

You're getting there! That's a bummer about the job! On the other hand, the weather's getting better, and with more time-to-do-what-you-want, the Toyota project may benefit.

I am getting a head from dirtyboy. It should be here pretty soon. For some reason 22r and 22re's are really hard to find around this area. I only found a couple and they were already picked through and what was left was junk. Salvage yard suck around the qc area. I am spending way too much time on YT latley. I would much rather be outside working on my truck. Can't wait till my parts get here. After I get it running right the only mods for the next year or so are gonna be a sawzall and $100 paint job.

I am stressed about not having a job but I really feel it was time to move on. I didn't get fired, they just cut my hours in half(just as bad though). I am picking up some hours with another local chef for the time being. Also, I recently learned that the country club where I worked a few years back is looking for a chef. I'll be heading there friday morning.

Well, all my parts were here and I was up till about 6 am this morning putting the motor back together. I went to fill it up with antifreeze and it started pouring out the back of the motor. Oh NO! Oh Ya!?! Stupid block off plate! That taken care of, set to TDC, Dist to #1, double checked everthing, crossed my fingers and turned the key. The suspense!!!!

The bad news, couldn't get the truck to stay running. It would run for like 30 sec then it would only stay running if I gassed it. It smelled really rich and acted like the timing was off. I tried the dist in several different locations and had no luck. When it first starts up it will run great for a few sec.

The good news, NO MORE CLACKETY CLACK

Other than playing with the timing and checking for major vacuum leaks, any suggestions? I'll get some sleep and go back at it fresh.

P.S. After cleaning up my old head, I definitly had a bent valve. The #2 piston with the carbon buildup had marks from the intake valve hitting.

No more "Problematic 22re"

Well after this rediculous, long thread the truck finally pulled out of the garage at about 11pm tonight. After putting the motor back together I had a vacuum leak that took forever to track down. I still have some tinkering to do, but she purrrrrs like she must have 10 years ago. It is quiet enough to hear the injectors click a little. I am so happy. Thanks to everyone that has helped me. No more "Problematic 22re".
