Problem with new head gasket
I bought the head gasket set off egnblder and put truck together. Leaked oil and ran rough so took it apart and coolant in clynders. Head gasket looks ok. Any ideas? I tougued it down to what was said on here like 58 I think it was.
Had head tested and was all good and straight before I put it together. Hasn't run even med heat.
Been awhile since I last worked on it.
I have no money so can I reuse head gasket? Which way does it go I forget. Metal up or down? I knew when I put it on but forget now. Can I put the goo gasket on top and bottom of head gasket to make sure it doesn't leak again.
Thanks for any help

Here's the easy way to find out if the deck is level with the timing cover:
Put the cover on the engine, the dowels should hold it in place. Use a steel ruler on it's edge and set it along the timing cover and deck. If you can slide a .005" feeler gauge in front of cyl#1, you need to bring them to a machinist to have it decked together.

With these old trucks Pretty hard to know if the block was ever decked
Unless it has been in the family it`s whole life
Then this is in that grey area of the Toyota Blocks is it New Style or Old style ??
Might even be the wrong timing set which would make a mess
Just thought of this !!

Found out the reason.
I was out cleaning everything and decided to take another look at the head gasket. The whole side of it crumbled when I touched it with my finger. I don't know what was wrong with it but the composite that makes it had an issue I guess. I'm glad to know.
I thank everyone for your time answering my questions. I really do appreciate it

I've heard that dnj has quality control issues, but a new gasket crumbling apart is worse than I would've expected.
Lots of people use those gaskets so maybe roll the dice and try again or spend $40+ on the Toyota one.
58 ft/lbs head bolt torque was spec'd in the manual, but 65 ft/lbs is an updated number from Toyota to address head gasket leak problems. Engnbldr tells customers to use the higher torque value also.

Ok, where are you and thefishguy77 getting 65? Book says 58, LCE says 62 you guys say 65.................block is in the shop getting bored out so I really would like to know what the correct number is so when the time comes I'll be ready. I bought new genuine toyota head bolts just to be safe. Really don't want to have an issue after I put it all together.

These days Toyota, 22reperformance and engnbldr all recommend 65 ft/lbs. If you don't trust that, go with 62, or even 58ft/lbs. As long as you clean the gasket surfaces and bolt threads properly and torque down in the right order you should be ok.
