Priming Oil Pump
Ok, I've had the oil pan and oil pump off of my truck for several days now, infact, a week. When I ordered my timing kit, I was instructed to prime the oil pump with either oil, or vaseline. When they say prime, do I just pour some oil right onto the gears of the pump? How do I keep it from flowing out as i install the pump? Should I try to pour some of the oil into the sump tube from the top? I have NO desire to eff up my engine so I want to get it right.

I would say u got a 50/50 chance of it priming and pumping the first time u crank it over after completing the job. When u rebuild my engine i just pulled the coil wire and cranked till i got oil in the top end and it worked out fine. Ive also done a timing on another 22r where it didnt prime up so i ended up pumping gear oil into the pump through the front seal and it works. I would just put some gear oil or grease on the teeth and you wont have problems. Make sure to buy cheap .99 cent oil when u fire it back up.

the oil light will go out. Give it up to 5 seconds for the oil light turn off after u start it up, if it goes out your good to go, if it stays on try one more time and if it fails again then you gonna have to get it prime. Run the oil for a little, you dont have to change it right after u start it up. run it for a couple days with cheapo oil then replace the oil and filter with good oil and filter, I like running castrol gtx and wix or OEM filters. Even with a sr5 gauge you wont read pressure by cranking the engine. Its only a couple psi at idle so chances of the needle moving are slim and none anyways.

if it was a 22r you just fill the pump with assembly grease I don't know how the v6 pumps are assembled you do not want to crank the motor to prime, done it replaced the bearings after about a month, if it were a v8style pump you would spin it with a drill with the pickup in oil, or fill with assembly lube running the pump dry to try to prime could even damage the pump

I think he was saying prime it with oil then crank to make sure that it actually did prime and create oil pressure.
What is assembly grease? I've never heard of it. I've got some wheel bearing grease if thats the same thing. I was also told i could use Vaseline to prime the oil pump. If thats not going to hurt the engine, I may lean towards doing it that way, just because it's thick and won't get away from me before i get the pump on.
