Pre-85 22r parts/reliability?

Hey everyone. I'm looking at a 84 pickup with a 22R. I read that the 22R's before 85 were very different from the 85+ ones. Is there going to be an issue getting parts for this old generation motor? What about the reliability? I don't want to get a truck that needs parts all the time and they are unavailable.

I currently have a 88 2wd 22R truck, would it be a good idea to try and swap the engines?

I think those parts will be around for awhile as far as engine it is the dealer only things that can be a issue with ones that old.

Then with more and parts made in China all the parts quality goes down hill.

After all it is just the engine parts you need worry about with the older style engine .

Pre-85 22r's arent all 100% the same, lc enginering has all the info and parts you'll need.
Pre 85's are tougher in my opinion but make less power and I don't think they get as good of gas mileage.

If your worried about reliability on a thirty year old truck. Well it's thirty years old... Even the most reliable vehicles will have maintenance issues with time. Not trying to be a jerk just want to state the obvious.

Several parts vendors. An older 22r gives you the option for a 22r/20r hybrid. But the more you modify a vehicle the more you reduce the factory reliability (not a rule but been my observation.

engnbldr.com is good for engine parts
rock auto for many various parts
amazon I've notice general maintenance stuff is cheaper
advance - lifetime warrantee and they are located through country
Toyota for oil filter don't trust any other brands, frequent hot debate.

Good luck.

Good luck.
No worries, I just love how easy it is to get parts for my 88. It's easy to work on too. I just don't want to get another if it's going to suddenly become hard to find parts that fit.

Thanks for all the feedback so far!

Are you planning a DD or build? The possibilities are limitless, well limited by time and money

I already have a DD, but it's nice to have the option. The SFA trucks appeal to me more, even though I don't plan on doing a ton of wheeling. I got an 88 2wd to test the waters a few months ago and I fell in love with the mid-80s Yota.
