PLEASE help need more power

Hey guys I have a 84 pickup with three inches of suspension lift, 32x11.50 on 15x10 eagles,4.88 gears. It's an 84 so obviously it is a 22r,carbed and straight axle. Ok here is my dalema,I ned more power. I know there is turbos and efi swaps and such but those things are all out of my price range and probobly my skill level. I was told I should rebuild by wabbit and I sure respect his opinion but at 142k and the way I drive it I realy don't think it needs it not yet anyways so I hear a 4.3 not that I want a bow tie in my yota but I hear it's realy eazy and great bang for the buck. So I ask my fello toyota lovers any opinions or suggestions for a man on a budget any help is great thanks guys and don't be afraid to feedback I want to hear it all..

Have you considered rebuilding the carb and putting in an engine builder cam?

carb, cam, headers/exh., ele fan are the easiest and most straight forward.

I have considered all of these things but the carb was rebuilt three yaers ago before I bought it 23k miles ago and as for the cam I live in california is this cam and headers going to keep me smog legal. I can do the 4.3 swap with a carbed setup and be smog legal if I do it rite now don't get me wrong guys I want to keep my 22r but is it practical I do want more power and to go offroading and every thing else my dd has been good for I love my toyota. Any other suggestions guys keep it comeing.

the cam may not be strictly street legal, but if the engine's tuned properly it should pass emissions. as for headers, thorley makes cali legal headers (and I think they were also sold through TRD) and TRD used to sell a cali-legal cam for the 22r/re also. not sure if they still do.
