Picking it up today

'85 long bed 4WD with only 500,056 miles!

My uncle finally replaced his truck, so it's my turn to show it some love.

Your '85 with 500,000 miles looks better than my '84 with 58,000 miles!

What are your plans for it?

First up are new rear brakes and axle seals. Next will be a new-to-me bench seat or repair the foam on the existing bench and put a cover on it. The old seat shows every one of those 500k miles. It runs really well though, and has surprisingly tight steering considering no steering components have ever been replaced. I also need to replace the springs (rears are sagging badly), but I don't know what to go with yet. I don't necessarily want to lift it, but 2" wouldn't be terrible.

Oh, the end of the bed where it meets the tailgate is trashed, too. Some acid was spilled in the bed (on the bedliner) but hit bare metal down at the tailgate some years back. The hinges and connecting metal below the gate are gone. It's a long bed, so I'm considering either chopping about 6 inches off of the end and weld the corners back on or just replacing the bed. Thoughts?

Mike

clean truck. replacing the bed- long beds in good shape are getting harder and harder to find...A mini bobbed bed would do the trick but is the damage that bad to make it worth it?

also - hope you either didn't tow it on the dolley very far or you removed the rear drive shaft. the transfer case bearings don't get lubes properly when flat towed.

I removed the rear shaft. All is good.
