Occasionally starts / wont stay running.

Good morning, This is gonna be long but I feel it needs a back story........ 85 22RE. About a year ago, after several hours of wheeling, it began to stumble and run rough. I let it cool down over night and it ran fine the next day. It did this a handful of times and I just blew it off. It got more frequent this winter / spring so I started chasing the problem. I replaced the fuel pump and it ran great, so took her wheelin las month and after a couple hours it stumbled, backfired out the intake and quit. I left her on the trail overnight and went back in the morning. It started right up and ran for 15 minutes, quit and never ran again that trip. Got her home and it would not start for weeks. The fuel pump was not coming on, so I jumped the pump and it started but quit as soon as I oppened the throttle. It will now start occasionally when I mess with the mixture screw on the throtle body but will not stay running and I have done nothing but let it sit in the garage and give it dirty looks for a month.

What I've replaced so far :

Fuel pump
AFM
Plugs / wires / coil
fuel filter
EFI relay
EGR delete

I feel like I'm chasing a phantom electrical problem related to the EFI or maybe fuel pressure regulator? I am just short of preschool knowledge of electronics so any help is very appreciated...... Thank you!

Hmm... I see youve replaced the afm? That would have been my 1st guess. Next I would look at the cor.

OK it got a little weirder. I pulled the COR and jumped it at the plug so the fuel pump is on when the ignition is on. It started right up and ran rough but evened out. It got to opperating temp and I gave it gradual throttle and it was fine. I gave it sharp throttle and promptly died. It started back a couple times but died after running for a few seconds and now will not start again. I am now more lost than before....... Any more ideas out there? Thank you!

Did you ever look at the fuel regulator? The other two things I was thinking of are the timing and a vacuum leak somewhere. Your last post makes me lean toward vacuum leak.

I could not find a vaccum leak, but will go over it again when I get off in the morning if I can get it to start again. I have not tried to advance the timing, I will give that a shot also. Thanks again!

The only way I know to check the fuel pressure regulator is to pull the vaccum line and wait to see if it starts to spit gas while running. I cant keep it running long enough and I hate to throw more expensive parts at it that dont fix her.

pull spark plugs and see what they look like. the porcelain should be about card board brown if the fuel mixture is correct. white= lean dark=rich.

that will help you figure out if its a fuel issue or a vacuum leak/air issue. obviously if it's rich you're not having issues getting fuel.

Have you checked TPS values?

The next time it wont start, I would try to see if it is on the spark plug side. I would try to ground the plug and see if it is firing.

I would also try to see if it is on the fuel injector side by seeing if it is operating the injector, by seeing if with the plug out that it is putting raw fuel into the cylinder. I would try to twist a paper towel an stick it into the cylinder and see if it comes out wet and smells like fuel.

From your post I am unable to tell which system is causing you problems, Plugs or Injectors. That is how I would start. Once you determine which side it is on, then that will open up alot of options for you for more troubleshooting.

Thank you for all the help! No vaccum leak. Good spark. I took the cover off the COR to watch it and it clicks over when I crank the motor, however the fuel pump is not coming on. If I hot wire the fuel pump from the battery, it runs fine but the motor still dies with sharp throttle. The plugs are brand new and still white as I have not got it to run long enough to break them in. It has got to be on the fuel / air delivery side but I am toataly lost now and just about ready to turn in my nuts and take it to my local toyota guy.

In response to testing the TPS.... I done have an electrical tester. Is there a cheap trick to testing it?

You can unplug it... If it runs better, it needs adjusted, or replaced. I cant see a tps causing a no start tho...

Update, kind of, put in a new COR just in case I got lucky. No dice. Hot wired the fuel pum and she started right up and ran. ran through the RPM range fine. As I was sitting there thinking, it just died and I could hear the fuel pump just running great. It would not start. I loosened the mixture screw till it fired up again, ran a few seconds and died.

So the fuel pump wont turn on and the mixture must suck. I'm still lost and throwin in the old towel. If you guys think of anything before tomorrow morning please share, I'm gonna load her up in the morning.

Thanks again for your guy's help!

One problem I found on mine when it had similar problems was the pipe between the AFM and the throttle body was not sealing good at the motor end. The only way I found it was to tape the entire thing up and it started and ran fine. Got lucky and found one at Pull a Part for $8 and it ran like a champ again.

Thank you for all the help guys! I finally solved it. I had 2 different problems....... 1st there was a bad connection in the fuse box for the ignition fuse and the EFI fuse and it was causing the occasional start / no start. I bypassed to a seperate breaker and solved that. It would still die with sharp throttle. I found oil leaking from my fairly new aftermarket coil. Lesson learned and Toyota coil installed. Thanks again!
