no tach its bare base model haha.
well ive concluded that its bipolar.
i swapped the vacuum advance and it didnt change anything. cleaned the points on the dist cap and rotor still didnt change anything. checked all the connections to the ic regulator and ignition. and then it gets interesting
i held the passenger side butterfly closed while it idled. it started idling a lot smoother like a perfect idle. then as soon as i let the butterfly go it starts idling really rough and dies. so i kept it running til it warmed up and let the butterfly go and it started idling rough again and died. then my dad walked by so i started it up to show him and it started running PERFECT. now it continues to run perfect W T F!??!?!

At a certain point, it leads me to beleive that you are having some type of fuel/air issue. New fuel pumps have been known to be faulty, so that cant be completely ruled out.... but what does your carb float level look like?

Are you sure you're not flooding the carb? Do you smell gas? Seems like if it idles fine but when you give it gas it stalls it's often because of flooding. Seems weird though if you tried a whole different carb and it still happened. Anyway thought maybe don't get stuck on not getting fuel, because the same thing would happen if you were getting too much.
In my experience if it's an ignition problem, the thing just won't start, rather than dying when you give it gas. My ignitor went out and it just wouldn't start. It did die at first...I started it, it ran for about 5 seconds then died, but it would never start again. I don't think ignition stuff would cause the truck to die when you give it gas.

Have you pulled the new fuel filter just in case? I've heard of people who had to change their filter with every oil change, because they had rust in the gas tank and it would just continually plug the filter.

yeah ive had trucks that continually plug the filter this filter has less than an hour of drive timeon it and nothing changed when i put it on. the fuel level is a little high in the bowl does that mean i need to adjust the float? no gas smell.

As long as it isn't all the way up or all the way down... you should be OK... (at least generally speaking)... The thing that gets me is that when you restrict your airflow, the truck runs fine..... and then other times... its ok.... ummm... jetting in the carb, accelerator pump.....

Id say hit it with a hammer as that usually helps things... but in this case - no.... lol

***looking elsewhere... make sure your float level isn't too high.... it will cut your fuel delivery off

Does the accellerator pump squirt fuel in the venturi when you prees the pedal? When you open the throttle you are letting air into the carb. So if it's bogging then you need more gas to enter when you press the pedal.

start with vacume lines and check the site glass on the float bowl it mite be a bad float adjustment to high or to low or even possible sunken float. if you have a rebuild kit pull the flat bowl apart and pull the float out if it sounds like liquid inside its got a hole somewhere.also check the needle valve for varnish and wear it mite not be opening.

well haha the weird thing is i was working on it and it magically started running fine and continues to do so. i'm pretty confused. i cant figure out how to provoke the problem so i just have to wait til im driving and it decides to die again.

oh and another thing, i figured out that when it is going through a non running period i can get it to revv if i hold the upper passenger butterfly closed.

Upper passenger 'butterfly' is your choke plate.

When you hold it closed, you're richening up the mixture.

I'd suggest you clean the little float bowl window so you can see if there is fuel in the float bowl when this happens. You will have to remove the bottom of the air cleaner to see it the first time.

No fuel in float bowl when you have your symptoms = fuel pump, filter, or float valve (inside the carb) problem.

A popular cause is rust buildup inside the filter. When's the last time you changed yours, and when you did, did you try to blow fuel backwards out of the filter to see if there is significant debris inside?
