not getting fuel?

ive been battling this issue for a while now, my 22r runs fine at idle but if you give it any gas it just quits instantly. last night i took apart the carb, soaked the jets and a bunch of other parts and cleaned it up real nice still the same problem. i even tryed an extra carb ive got layin around still same problem. so does anyone have ideers?
and yes i replaced the fuel filter
thanks!

There's a window in the front of the carburetor that you can check with a flashlight that shows fuel level inside the bowl. It should be in the middle of the sight glass. If not, you have a fuel delivery problem, ie, filter, pump, etc.

On my truck I put a clear motorcycle fuel filter after the pump, before the carburetor, so that I can monitor the fuel flow. If I see bubbles in the filter, I know my main filter is plugged :o

If your fuel level in the carburetor is good, then you likely have blockage in the jets, which requires minor disassembly of the carburetor, and cleaning with stiff wire and/or compressed air, along with plenty of carburetor cleaner.

HTH.

Could it be the timing advance?
Maybe something ignition related?
Anyone?

My old '84 did that, but it turned out to be the fuel pump. Did you check your ignition components? Cap/rotor, plug wires, coil? I'm just trying to think of some possible culprits..

Just a simple thought, but how sure are you of all of the vacuum lines? I would think that if you had timing issues, that it would grunt & sputter, not die completely. Fuel or air probs seem like an easy start.... I could be wrong tho... Anyone else?

i checked them when i put em on about 2 weeks ago. i wonder if the dist. slipped a little bit and its way off time ima go check. when i got the donor motor for this truck it had a brand new fuel pump but maybe its bad. ill try an older one i know it good.

i dont know the vacuum system too well but i know everything is hooked up i have a perfect running identicle truck to compare vacuum to and it matches up good.
the reason i thought it could be ignition timing is cause as your rpm's speed up, there is a vacuum operated advance, since the pistons are moving faster it must spark earlier and if thats disfunctional then it will run fine on 5% at idle but not at higher r's

Check the cacuum advance, they can go bad and cause problems, and its a very expensive part to replace. i had to replace one on an 84 4Runner 22R that i used to own.

ok heres what i found.
timing was about 3% after tdc.. waaay late. so i adjusted that and it started running a little better. then i soaked the carb in spray carb cleaner and gave it a few revvs. a little better. then i took it for a little drive and its running great for about 15 mins so i open it up in a feild and then all of a sudden it quits. just like that. nothing. same problem again. im stumped.
timing is good its getting fuel and spark carb is rebuilt what else could it be??

OK... well.. lets assume for the moment that the fuel delivery side is fine (new pump, filter, reb. carb). That should only leave one other thing - spark delivery system. What is the condition of your plugs/wires/cap/rotor? Have you checked for any loose connections?

- Just throwin out ideas... as stumped as you are

loose connection is very possible. the plugs are pretty dirty but they wouldnt cause it to run perfect then not run, then run perfect, then not run again it happened so suddenly it makes me think there could be a short somewhere. cap, wires, and rotor were good a few weeks ago when i put the motor together but ill go check them

all ignition related and carb related connections look good. im about to check the cap and rotor.
Does anyone know if i can put an early model 22r (84) vacuum advance on the late model 22r (85)

The only other thing that might be.... what about the pickup for the coil itself (points/electronic... whatever)... possibly testing that. Altho, if you were able to read your tach, which uses that signal, probably not....

- Tryin to think of other ideas
