noisy 22-RE
i've got an 85 4runner with the 22-RE and i know these engines are inherently noisy however from listening to another truck, and then listening to mine, mine is so much louder, i've adjusted the valves a couple times now with minimal improvement. i still hear tons of clatter. the timing chain is in good condition. so i'm pretty sure it's not that. looking for any suggestions... TIA!

I had some valve chatter when i would start my rig.. it sounded like a diesel engine.. I discovered I had a few oil leaks and when I changed my oil pump during my timing chain repair, it went away.. Good luck..

Over-tightening the valve cover bolts can cause a lot of valve noise. The bolts do not need to be tight. Try loosening them a little with the engine running and see if it gets quieter, but do not get them too loose or the valve cover will leak oil.

Have you checked your exhaust manifold? Bolts can loosen and back out, manifold itself can warp and cause dieseling sound with leak. On a cold motor, soak with penetrant, torque to spec. and then listen for leaks with a piece of hose.
