I hate changing Birfields, and that's in the garage with all the tools. I would really hate to change one on the trail with minimal tools. It was worth the $650 to have that piece of mind for me rather than hope for good luck.

I wouldn't even consider the D44 cv conversion, just put that money towards Longs and be done with it.

 

MarlinCrawler has the D44 U joint kit for $450, saves money. Not saying that it is the route I will take, just playing Devil's Advocate.

I've been thinking about painting it red again. Removing everything on the outside that can be...lights, bumpers and the like...tape the windows again and take the top off for the paint. I could then get a new piece for the rear 'toyota' part. Trim the rust out and do some patching but leave the fenders larger for clearance.

Anyone in Colorado good with bodywork?
