Need help changing out a tranny mount on my 85 4Runner

Ok, my regular mechanic buddy is out of town for 10 days... so my plea for help lays upon all of your shoulders.

I'm no mechanic by any stretch... but I do know how to do some things. I've changed tranny mounts on previous vehicles before, but none had this kind of hiccup.

I can easily access and remove all of the bolts on the crossmember and on the exposed side of the tranny mount. But I can't seem to get to the other side of bolts on the mount. The front drive shaft and transfer case seem to be in the way.

Am I missing something? Is there an easier way to do this or do I need to remove the DS so I can access the bolts? Help!!!

Red face

You are talking about the right side

I am not sure but I think I always had the driveshaft out .

I don`t know if you can do it with the drive shaft in.

You might be able to break the bolts loose with a 12 mm box wrench then unscrew them with a 1/4" ratchet.

From the front of the Cross member. It is much easier with the weight off the cross member.

I just changed my mount and did not remove the driveshaft. I no longer have the shield around the cv joint for the driveshaft though, which may have made my life easier. crack the 12mm bolts free with the box end of your wrench and then you should be able to get it out with your open end. seeing that you are in sunny Cali, you don't even get that lovely rust to deal with.

So is it just one of those really poor designs, that make it such a hard to reach place that I'll only be able to rotate the wrench 1/16" of an inch 100+ times before the bolt comes out?

Who the ˟˟˟˟˟˟ designed it that way? HAHAHA.

So have you completely removed the x-member?

Its been a while since I've done one but don't ya just remove the 4 bolts holding the tranny mount to the X-member and the 4 bolts holding it to the frame.

Drop the x-member down and bam the bolts are right there to take off the mount.

Am I missing something?

I got my set of Gearwrench brand wrenches from True Value for $10.99. They are lifetime warranty and you can get them replaced at Sears.

I wouldn't put too much faith in the HF wrenches.

Yeah, seems like it'd be that easy, but it's not. The 8 bolts for the crossmember came out just fine. Then the 2 left side bolts of the mount came out of the tranny just fine. It's the last 2 bolts on the right ride of the tranny that are the problem. They're kind of hidden behind the driveshaft. Hardly any room to get to them. I will try it again on Sunday when I get home from our trip and let you know how it goes.

Sorry I meant 8 bolts.

Anyway, yes, yes it is really that easy.

Crawl under your truck. Look at the center section of your x-member. Notice the holes in it. Look into those holes and you will see bolts. There are 4 of them, take them out but be sure to have the tranny supported.

With the crossmember out of the way you can easily access the tranny mount bolts.

Just so were clear. The transmission mount un-bolts from the cross member from the bottom.

The sale is over now but I would still rather have lifetime warranty tools over the HF stuff.

Just gotta scan the net to find the deals.
