I'm going to go look at 1984 extended cab 4x4 tomorrow, its been sitting for a month and the alternator is out is there anything i should look for. from what the owner has said the bed rusted through and not repairable but the cab, and drive train is still good, its been a Oklahoma truck since new hes asking 750 is it worth it?

Check the frame rail by the gas tank. A lot of people fail to check for crud buildup over the tank lip and it collects moisture and rots the frame. Also, check by the front shackle mounts where the frame curves out. This is another spot where the frame likes to rot.

How many miles on the drivetrain? look through all the boxed sections of frame for rust. Look for the obvious stuff like oil leaks, oil in the coolant or vice versa etc... Get on your local craigslist and check out what similar trucks go for too, things don't sell for the same price everywhere.

Remember its a 24y/o with a bed that has rotten off , a truck that with no working alternator you won't be test driving. This could be a money pit or a simple fix. And even if you charge the battery off to spin around the block you won't get an accurate picture. So the real question is how much are you ready to dump in to this? time and money. How much mechanical expertise do you have?

X2 on that.... Plus
check the entire frame for any large rust spots that would be the MAIN thing id start with if it looks like somethings wrong it is dont second guess it bring a jump pack and make sure you start it check for smoke on start up look for large oil build up all over the motor and tranny check the radiator fluid for rust i mean its a 750$ truck its not going to be anything spectacular you have to be the judge of what its worth... remember scrap prices just droped again so if it ends up being crap you cant even get your money back for scraping it!! just thought id throw that in!! haha

scrap an 84 toyota? You're going straight to Hell!

haha just kidding!... kind of.

The good thing is, these trucks (even as projects) are pretty dang simple to work on. I'm in the middle of an old Datsun 240z... love the body style and the engine... HATE everything else.

84 is a 22r motor (or SHOULD be anyway). Look at the carburetor... one thing that's always seemed consistent is that if a carburetor looks like crap, its gonna perform like crap. If you know how to rebuild one, you're looking at a $25 fix. If you're gonna replace it as a unit... add a zero to that first price.

If its been sitting for a long time, you'll probably end up with oil leaks if they aren't already there. Crankshaft seals don't like to sit for years and then be put back to work.

The frame on the truck was in good condition, the bed was not as bad as the owner said ,it should be repairable, the body was in ok condition with a little rust around the door trim. Hooked the jumper cables up and it started right up. Drove it around the block it had slightly less power then my 94 but i didn't see any major problems. I just did a full gte + v160 swap in my is300 so i think i can work on a carbed 22r, but body repair will be a new adventure. thanxs for all the help guys.

Yeah that's the carb setup for ya...

I look at the EFI harness and manifold sitting in a bucket in my garage and start dreaming...
