Here is my new 1985 4Runner. I bought it for $2000. It has a new head, timing chain, cam and clutch. It runs really good. It has a few issues.



The idle goes up and down while the brake is depressed, I assume its a vacum leak but I cant find it. It needs new front axle seals and the rear window isnt working.

Here is the parts list: Hood (preferably white), Rear Bumper, Console lid, window switches, interior door handles. Its not a huge list and im sure I can find the hood, the interior stuff I need some help with.

I think I can figure out the brakes and rear window. Ive already looked for the knuckle rebuild...just not ready to tackle that yet.

The reason I question the rear bumper is because I havent seen any 4runners with that bumper...i like it, its just jacked up, I might be able to straighten it out tho.

Also is that a factory paint scheme?

 

Looks pretty clean, I can't tell if that bumper is stock or not I thought they were flat without the curve looks like a pickup bumper customized but I could be wrong? Not sure on the two tone paint being stock but it looks retro and awesome, I like it

 

Thanks. Yeah I think its a pickup bumper too. It fits too good and the plastics look right...but idk. I swear ive seen another 4runner with this paint on a forum but i cant find it, it had a white top tho.

 

Ok it is a factory bumper...just need to find a new one or repair this one.

Sounds like the brake booster or line feeding it is leaking. Pump the brakes up (mash the pedal two or three times), hold it down and crank it up. The pedal should drop and inch or so when the motor cranks if the booster is working properly. If the brake pedal is hard all the time that is an indication of a bad booster. You can plug the line going to the booster to rule out anything else going on causing the idle problem, the brakes will be hard for sure then. Check the booster right under the master cylinder and if you can see where it is wet or has been leaking the master cylinder will need attention also.

 

Well its not the brake booster that is for sure. I ruled it out last night. What is the correlation between the brake and fuel injection system other than vacum?

 

The idle still changes with the brake booster vacuum line disconnected and plugged? If so the only thing else I can think of that is going on is the brake light circuit. Not sure how that would cause any trouble with the fuel injection but if someone has tried to correct a problem in the past they might have caused one, just a speculation.
Possibly pulling fuses and seeing if you can find out what circuit is causing the problem. I'm sure others on this forum with more knowledge than myself should be able to shed some light on this. Sounds strange that is for sure.

 

Yes, I took the vacum line off at the booster and plugged it, pressed the brake and the idle surges, it doesn't die it just surges several hundred RPMs. It will only do it when the engine is at operating temp. Other than this the engine runs great.

 

Was doing some reading on your problem and found this info. It is saying that the ECU gets a signal when the brakes are applied (post #20). I would assume you should be able to take the connector off the switches on the brake lever and see if this eliminates the idle issue and then go from there.

Thank you soooo much!!! I will check the timing, idle and TPS sensor tonight. Im sure there is info on here how to check the TPS...ive done it on a TPI Camaro but not on a Toyota.

as far as the rear window,make sure all the bolts are in that hold the top on,i believe its the 2nd one on the left from the back that has a safety switch in it,when you remove the bolt,it activates the switch so you cant move the window...dont ask me how i know this....

 

I just turned the idle screw down a little and it fixed the idle issue with the brake... However the tach doesn't work and I can't get our old school engine analyzer working bc idk where the green wire should go, I'm used to working on chevy small blocks where it goes on the coil itself

 

Hook the tach up to battery as normal and attach to the coil at the (-) negative post.

I dont recall my coil having a terminal on it. Do all of them have a terminal on them? Ive been wrong before though.

 

The coil should have a cover over it. Unplug the plug wire and the cover comes off to where you can get to the terminals.
