how hard is it to switch from a manual tranny to an auto on an 85 pickup?

probably impossible.I'm pretty sure you would have to do a complete wiring harness and computer swap, not like an auto to man swap where you can fool an ecu. maybe if you have a complete donor vehicle. I'm sure anyone here would ask you why?

unless its got sentimental value, itd be easier and more cost effective to sell yours and buy one with an auto.

For as great as the 5 speeds are, I cant seem to get rid of mine......
$150 takes the Trany & T-case!
Oh well, I guess they get to sit in the corner.......

I was running the 5 spd and my buddy had an auto..... I walked all over him doing anything and everything, everywhere. Just more power to the ground, plain and simple.

LOL, I also have a W56\TC sitting in the garage and if I came across a good A340H (isn't that what the AT is?) for cheap, I'd buy it as a spare for my offroad 4runner, which is an auto and I wouldn't give that auto up for anything.

I love how people as how hard something is....everyone has different skill levels, access to tools, a garage to work in, etc...

I say it would be easy but stupid. What I'd do is get a donor harness, computer, trans, t-case, cooler, lines, d-shafts, x-member mount, linkage, shifters, center concel, cluster, kickdown, pedals, ECT computer, etc... after I got all of that, punch myself in the face for WASTING money and time on a Toyota automatic transmission over a 5spd, espically on a 1985

Just wondering. I have the tools and ability and was thinking for the ease of driving an auto but I just got a 2010 Mazda 3 so never mind on that! But don't worry I didn't sell my man truck for a car. I commute to college right now and when I move I'll be commuting about 120 miles a day so I was looking for something I didn't have to shift.

The biggest issue would be wiring. You'd need a complete harness, cab and chassis.

This is exactly it. It bolts right up if you have a donor rig to use all the wiring and parts from. Find a donor rig, bolt it right up.

I like autos cause I can have my coffe cup in one hand and the steering wheel in the other and go any where without having to let go of the coffee cup!!

You need to let go of your coffee to shift?!?!? You probably should have an auto tranny then, perhaps auto hubs, lockers, and hell even auto-pilot!

(Don't need anything to get in the way of coffee.)
