...We got in a hurry, left the key in the ingnition, turned to ON, while we swapped out the Engine Control unit.



It's my Son's 85 4-Runner. We took the engine and Tranny out of his wrecked 86 Extended Cab Pickup and plopped it into this 85 Runner I found.

We got everything hooked up.... The lights came on in the dash, the engine turned over, but it wouldn't fire.

We rechecked all the connections, checked the fuel pump, the coil, distributor, everything....

I thought maybe there might be somthing wrong with the Engine Control unit, (Maybe we mixed them up in all the hubub.) so I suggested we swap it out with the one that came with the Runner body. So we unplugged it and plugged in the spare.

Climbed in behind the wheel and realized the key was IN and tuned to to ON. And we had left the battery hooked up as well.

Ugh...

Now, NOTHING works. No dash lights, no starter, no annoying buzz when you insert the key....

Nothing.



I feel like such an idiot... We had been vigilant about disconnecting the battery and the ignition with every step of this assembly. But we got all excited, and got stupid, and now I think we are hosed....

So, does anybody have any idea how screwed we are?

FWIW, we yanked the Engine Control unit and stuck it in my 85 4-Runner, and it started right up. So we didn't fry that.

I'll take any suggestions, no matter how small. My son and I are pretty dissapointed. (We were doing so good!)

 

I think the obvious first place to start is checking all the fuses and go from there.

 

Check the BIG fuses in the engine fuse block. They don't pull out, you have to unbolt them from the bottom.

 

We checked the fuses in the two fuseboxes, but I didn't encounter any that needed to be unbolted.

They are actually called fusable links technically I believe.

So, I checked these Fuses.




I did not encounter any that needed to be unbolted.


They all popped right out...



I checked each one with a multimeter, each one checked out fine.


I even checked under the fuse box....



Popped off the bottom cover...

Nothing I could see that I could "Unbolt".

Am I missing somthing?

 

Ones on my 87 are bolted in.

 

Dammnit...

you have to take that fuse block out, the big one with the efi fuse in it....and turn it over, there are more relays and fuses/fusible links on the bottom.

 

Have you checked the battery connections or tried a new battery?

Yep. Thats the first thing we checked. We had just re-built all of the battery connections, they are solid.

The headlights and the hazards come on with no problem.

Then we tried his battery in my 85 Runner, and it started right up.

It's not the battery. (Wish it was!)

We also swapped out the coil into my Runner, to see if maybe we fried that. It started my Runner right up....

 

Drivers side kick panel! You need to check the fuses there. Prob i'm guessing you blew the fuse for the computer A.K.A the EFI fuse. If so then its most likely your prob. check all grounds make sure they are sucure and corrrect. Check body grounds make sure they are all bolted in tight and not corroded. Check battery? Clean termianls, make sure they are tight. Everything plugged up that needs to be?

 

Got it!



It wasn't any of the fuses. Something in the ignition was cooked. We pulled the ignition harness off of the spare steering column, stuck it in his runner, and blammo - We got juice!





Now we just gotta figure out why it wont start....

 

Have you got the neutral saftey switch hooked up or bypassed ?, that would keep the truck from starting.

 

We got it too!!

It was a fuse.

The fuse box was full of every color of fuse except the correct ones...



Ugh...

It's all cosmectic from here!
