ok I ran that paper clip diagnostics test and the check engine light flashed once paused and then flashed again. It did this reapetedly which is code number 1 which is normal operation. I know I had it hooked up right because then I disconnected the mass airflow sensor and it ran code 2 and 8: open or shorted air flow meter circuit and open or shorted intake air thermo circuit. So now does anybody have any ideas? It also feels completely gutless no matter what RPM or speed your at. But the motor still meets factory compression with no leaks. I think it might be the cat. If someone will just respond saying, "Hey I have no idea. sorry man." instead of saying nothing I would feel much better. This is in relation to my other post about the cold start problem that I posted earlier. Any idea at all that would helpful.

 

try changing the cat........... had a bud of mine and he had a plugged cat and lost all power and car would over heat. u can also fire the truck up at night ( make sure there is no light, pitch dark) and look at the manifold/header and see if it starts glowing. if it does then the cat is clogged.

 

also try a full tune up if u havent done one yet

 

Ok thanks a lot. I'll have to try that tonight and I already did a tune up a few months ago. On top of that their is a new fuel filter, all new vaccum lines, and new exhaust manifold gaskets. So it runs great now, it justs has no power.

Do you have larger than stock tires? if so, did you regear? Did it feel "gutless" before a certain time (like 3 weeks ago, 2 days ago, etc)?Or has it always felt "gutless" to you?
After driving for an extended period of time (15+ minutes) smell the cat/exhaust piping area. If it smells like rotten eggs, thats a good indication of a clogged cat. Also, like KC said, the cat and/or or headers can glow redish if your cat is clogged.

 

no it started feeling gutless about 6 months ago. I used to be able to spin my 31" BFG's shifting into second gear. Yes it has been regeared and it has an toyota stage one cam, K&N air filter, downey offroad header, and flowmaster exhaust system. So I should really be having, in my opinion, absolutely no power issues. Which I didn't, like I said, until about 6 months ago. My exhaust has smelt funny lately though.

 

When was the last time you cleaned the air filter? What does the exhaust smell like?

 

Have you checked the timing? It sounds like the timing is off. When you set the timing, set the idle speed to 750 RPMs and then set the timing to 5degrees with the T1 and E1 terminals jumped. All this assuming you have a 22RE

 

The last time I cleaned the air filter was just a few months ago, so in other words it didnt help with the power issue. The exhaust smells kind of like burning mud(darn muddin making my exhaust smell). But my exhaust system isn't caked in mud... yet. But no seriously the system is clean on the outside.

 

the timing and idle are both set accordingly. That's what is weird, everything is properly adjusted and in great shape and I'm still feeling the power loss. I think I'll replace the cat, and the muffler rattles so I think I will replace that While I'm at it. Motor makes perfect factory compression with no leaks in every cylinder so the motor isn't worn out also.

 

Try advancing your timing a few degrees. My 4Runner was doing the same thing. I timed it at 5 degrees and would barely pull itself up my driveway. After I advanced the timing, it ran perfect.
