Hey guys I went to a junkyard near me on Saturday since the guy said he had 3 older Yota trucks. Well I grabbed this cluster from an '84 Pickup with a 22RE with auto tranny since he kinda threw it in with the other parts I was buying. My question is, is this cluster considered an SR5? I was thinking so, but then I saw that the mph only goes up to 85, so now I'm not sure.

Definitely an SR5 cluster, because the standard cluster only has speedo, temp, and fuel.

 

Im not the authority on this, but I think because it has the tach it is the SR5

 

I have a tach in mine and it isn't a SR5...I haven't been able to figure out why this is.

 

But can anyone explain why the speedo only goes to 85 when other SR5's go quite a bit higher? I'm not saying I would need it to go higher, considering my truck only goes about 80, but I'm just curious.

I recall that in the early eighties all vehicles had speedometers that only went to 85. I think that was Carter Administration law. A silly one for sure.

 

That is an SR5 cluster because of the tach and volt/oil gauges. In early years (such as 84), the speedo only went up to 85 (mine is the same way, 85mph). Later models such as my friends 86 go up to 110 i beleive. Does anyone know if the 85 and 110mph versions are interchangeable? I would assume the difference is in the unit itself because I cant see there being any major differences in speedo cables from year to year.

 

Yes, that is correct it was some silly government mandate back then.

 

OK thanks for the help guys. I'm thinking of going back to the the yard soon and buying up some more parts. I can't stand to see good Yota parts just rotting away. I noticed that another '84 pickup and a 1st gen pickup had Aisin manual hubs. Do these work for '86 and up trucks and 4Runners, or will they only work for pre-'86 because of the axle type?

thats a 84 cluster. It will swap. remember the 84 head will only fit an 84. The hubs will not fit later axles.

 

rdlsz24 the aisin hubs on a 1st gen will fit 86 and newer, the hubs I took off my 85 solid axle yota fit my 88 SR5 IFS frontend so they should fit yours with no problems at all, I think

 

Wasn't it only the SR5 Auto's that had that Tach? I think that is a noob question...

 

Can someone confirm that both 1st and 2nd gen Aisin hubs will fit '86 and newer Yotas?

I would think that a 5 speed would be more likely to have a tach than an automatic, but sometimes not.

Yeah, the cluster looks just like my buddy's tach, except the lower max. speed, and he has an '85 4runner.

 

No, they are not interchangeable. Solid axles have 30 spline stub shafts and IFS, I believe, are 27 spline. The outer (dial) part might interchange, though--------Hans

 

I wish my 5 speed had a tach...I just go by my speed. 15 to second, 30 to third, and so on and so forth.

 

all sr5 had tach no matter if auto or manual. i got one of those 85 mph clusters in my shed with the tach

 

my bro has an 84 pick-up and he has the same cluster. I have an 88 runner and it is the same cluster except it goes to 110mph. Like other people said. (They are both SR5).

 

I don't have a tach in mine either (I didn't really buy this cluster to put in my truck). I just go by the sound of the engine. I don't even look at my speedometer, either, since it's off because of my 33's. I can just tell how fast I am going by how fast the scenery is flying by haha.
