okay.... i have an 85 toyota 4runner and it dont go to fast. it can basically get outta any mud hole i put it in but i just want it to go faster! so does anyone have any ideas on what i can do to make ma truck gofaster???

2. Threads with vague titles won't help you or others in the present or future.
3. Search in the 84-85 section for engine mods.
4. Search the entire board for engine and gearing mods.
5. Always understand that a '85 Toyota truck doesn't blend well with the word "faster".

You know these are great trucks:

They're so damned dependable... even after you flip it over being stupid, it still drives home. They're fairly easy to work on, the mileage is reasonable for such old technology, and they're rated as possibly the best light-duty offroading truck.

However while incorporating all of these neat traits into they're design, Toyota didn't consider the possibility that I might want to keep up with freeway traffic on my morning commute. That's the only downfall. (That and when friends want to go offroading, my truck is always the one "elected for the job".)

If you live in a part of the country that's still decent enough to let a man modify his OWN PROPERTY, I would suggest a motor conversion to the 3.4L Tacoma motor or even the Lexus V8 (I wanna say its the 5vz?).

There are kits to stroke it, you can always change compression and cam that bad broad up and throw a header on her. You can always throw a turbo on also. But if you live in California, you can pretty much throw those ideas away

 

Ok, so I just went back and saw you live in Montana! Well heck, throw a Chevy 4.3L V6 in there. Plenty of power without overloading the stock Toyota axles.

 

if you have the ability i would run a compression test and a leakdown test on that 22R/RE and see what condition its in. frankly for trucks that light a 22RE can accomplish usable speeds. if the motor does not appear to be in need of a rebuild i would re-time it, adjust the throttle cable, clean the intake and injectors, cut the exhaust off before the cat (gota love OBDI) and put a better muffler on it.

hillbillydeelux on this board has an 86 which was litteraly so slow it couldnt exceed 60mph. this is the orriginal motor with over 200,000mi on it. we adjusted the timing and the throttle linkage and he put some hooker headers and a k&n intake on it and then slapped my tacoma's old 32's on it and the damn thing goes over 100 now.

 

Just curious... was his 86 truck carbed or EFI? And what tires did he have on it prior to the 32's?

My motor is 'slow' (not struggling at 60 slow, but still pathetic) but I've always assumed its because its a 22R with 210k miles on it.

BTW, as far as visual inspections go in California, does your muffler have to "look" stock?

 

mine is hella slow too 0-60 in only 15mins

 

hey at least you don't have the body roll factor along with the slow part!


to the OP, gears are probablly going to be your best bet

 

you dont like the body roll? um thats why you have adjustable shocks. you dumbass haha jk
