help with 85 pickup
hey guys im new to the toyota thing and i jus bought me an 85 yota with a 3inch body and apparently a 3inch suspension but the shackles on the front springs are bottoming out on the frame, like the springs are 2 long or is that how its supposed to b? and also it came with a rod sticking out the side of the block n i took the motor down and apparently it had a torquer motor? so the bottom end is different than the normal 22r? so i bought a block crank n connecting rods from a buddy and it came from a 91 22re so i took the 85 head and 91 block to the machine shop and apparently the head is scrap and now ive been looking for a other motor and i cant find any 22r ive called about 10 places n most of em laughed sayin good luck finding that motor but i found a 22re so can you swap intakes on the re to an r any help will b nice
thanks

To answer the intake question, NO. The intake for a 22R (the carbureted motor) protrudes out level and a carb simply bolts on. The 22RE (the fuel injected motor) has an intake with 4 seperate "fuel passage ways" that make a radical downwards swoop under the EFI manifold and conjoins with the EFI manifold on its bottom side.
Did you say the block came with a rod sticking out? Like a Connecting Rod?!?!
Rod sticking out = Dead motor. Forget it. The best thing for it is to be melted down.
It sounds like you need a new motor and from what I understand the head is no good either. You can mismatch heads between carbureted and fuel injected motors, with the only two main differences that I am aware of:
1) The carbureted motor (22R) has a mechanical fuel pump that bolts onto the front, passenger side of the head. If you end up going with fuel injection, this port in the head will need to be blocked off. THis is because the EFI motors (22RE) use an electrical pump, which I believe is located inside the fuel tank.
2) The distributors, from what I have read, differ between EFI motors and carbureted motors.
This is all I am aware of as far as swapping heads between the 22R and 22RE. If this is all you are doing, then you should be fine.
NOTE: There is a rumor that using the 20R head (the smaller 2.2 liter motor) builds compression. This is not true, the major difference has something to do with the exhaust valves or exits. I have also heard that the 22R intake will not work on a 20R head. So, if you feel the need to bolt on a 20R head regardless of what is said, you will need a relative intake manifold, and possibly the 20R exhaust manifold as well.
SECOND NOTE: The Toyota Celicas before 1986 utilized the same motors as the trucks (20R,22R,22RE). Parts are virtually interchangable.
THIRD NOTE: I don't know who told you it is hard to find these motors, but I am already beginning to doubt their knowledge. These motors can be purchased rebuilt from any autoparts store belonging to a major chain. These motors can also be found in scrap yards, however they are probably in there for a reason. IF you can only afford a used motor, I suggest pulling it out of a car/truck that is wrecked. That way, you know the vehicle is not in there because the motor blew.
Good luck!

ALL '85-'95 22R/RE heads, cams, and short blocks are interchangeable.
So maybe all you may need is a good head. Do you mean "...torquer" or TURBO? If it was a 22RET, you gotta deal with wiring etcetera.
XtraSlow_XtraCab: I think he means coming off the head... And you say it: 22R and 22RE heads interchange. So, yes, the op could swap intakes...
XtraXtra is right about parts availability! There were lots made, so there are lots of parts. If you were blessed with a local Pick_n_Pull (like XtraSlow_XtraCab and yours_truly) , you could snatch up a good complete 22R/RE engine this weekend for about $75. ("Half-Off" weekend - I'm Thankful!!)

thanks guys that helped me out alot and me and a buddy found a 22r engine today in a junk yard so i picked it up for 175 and on the touquer motor? the guy i bought it from called it that and it had domed pistons double roller timing gears and apparently he said the crank was bigger but i never looked into that because it came up and slapped the rod sticking out of the block so its toast and what about the front leaf spring shackles is it alright to drive it like that? and thanks again
