heater problem, hurry its cold!

no 4crawler i havnt done that yet. been busy with finals but i plan on trying it soon. the coolant should be full if its not then i know ive filled it up once or twice and the results have been the same. air but no heat. i'll have to stop doing body work/paint for a day and flush that core out and see if i can get that working

alright, just backflushed and flushed the core. nothing. after a burst of fresh green radiator fluid on each side i put the garden hose on the tubing and crystal clear water comes out the other side. i think i found some kind of pump/valve right where one of the tubes connected to. i messed with my heater/temp. control settings on the dash and that thing didnt move. i dont know if that would move from those but if it does could be a broken line

Well, the valve must be open to let the hot coolant enter the heater core. There should be a cable from the temperature control lever on the dash that operates the valve.

If the valve is set to the open position and the tubing and valve is not clogged and the heater core is not clogged and there is hot coolant flowing into the valve and out the return line and the fan is blowing air over the core, then yes, there should be heat out of the heater. If not, then one of the above conditions is abset.
Do you hear any gurgling or whooshing sounds from behind the dash when the engine is revved and the heater valve is open? If so there may be an air pocket in the cooling system that is blocking flow to the heater or there could be an exhaust leak into the cooling system (i.e. HG leak). Low heater output and whooshing sounds always were an initial indication of a bad HG with my '85.

1. Bleed the cooling system if it is trapped air, park uphill or drive up some ramps, open rad cap, run engine until t-stat opens and see if the air can be released.
2. Pressure test the cooling system (probably have this done at a shop). They put a pump and gauge on the rad, pump it up to 10-15 psi and check for leaks. They can also see if the engine running causes the cooling system to become over-pressurized (i.e. the pressure builds as the engine is revved).
3. Test the coolant for the presence of exhaust gas:

for some reason my truck is running reallllllllllly hot. after flushing the core yesterday, i get to my class this morning and smoke is comming out of my hood. my first reaction is ahh crap i blew somehthing up. but my engine wasnt that hot. so i looked and it and i guess one of the hoses i disconnected was loose and fluid was squirting on my exaust(the smoke). so after class i tighted up the hose thinking that was just something small. now that its not leaking, i keep on overheating! since i disconnected the tubing is there air in the system and the engine isnt cooling off? there is still fluid in the container.

You might have a look on the 4x4Wire forum, there are some threads there on different tricks to bleeding air out of the system. I have never had any problems with that, but some folks do.

Sometimes the heavy wires that control the flappers under the dash come un-hooked, and/or just get seized in their lines.
There's one that controls hot and cold. Mine doesn't work, so I have to reach under and flip it open/closed with my hand.

ok guys, get ready for this story. so i come home from class overheating like crazy. i sit inside my house on the computer/watching tv you know that whole deal, waiting for my truck to cool off so i can work on it. after the radiator was cool enough to open i took the cap off. it looked dry in there. so i mixed up some antifreeze. topped off my little canister and dumped about a quart directly into the radiator. idled the truck for about 10 minutes. stayed at the same temp. later tonight(truck hadnt been ran since), the truck was dead cold. so i decided this was the perfect test. on my trip to church the engine stayed super cool. barley got over the first line. AAAAND!! the heater kicked in!
i cruised up in comfort with my hot hot heater blowing nice hot hot air on me. the core flush must have did it! either that, or i have no idea what i did but tinkering around with stuff worked i guess. and the temp. contorl on the dash works too because i moved it to 'cool' and then the heat stopped and cold air came out(air from outside, it was cold outside
) that flush must have did it. thanks you guys and especially 4Crawler. you walked me through it. i just hope that it still works tommorow. haha, with my truck reputation for doing things like that, i wouldnt doubt it. i'll get back to you guys on if it continues to work.
