Have A Problem, Need Help.

I bought an 84 4Runner that was a basket case, many years of abuse and no maintenance, I drove it to the muffler shop yesterday and it would hardly move from a stop (gas peddle to the floor barely moving), when i got it home i discovered that the timing was way off, adjusted it by ear (i don`t have a timing light) and it made a huge diference. now the problem im having is the idle is around 1500 - 2000 rpm and i can`t get it to come down. the idle adjustment is on the carb is screwed all the way out and i used carb cleaner to check for vacuum leaks. what am i missing here ?, anybody have any ideas why i can`t get the idle down ?.

Perhaps the choke is stuck. Maybe some part of the OEM emissions is causing it to idle up. With this many years, most of the factory emission equipment will be either dead or crazy. I gave up and tossed my factory carb on my '85 PU, put on a Weber and Offy intake, much easier to deal with. Good luck.

Ouch, I just noticed you're in California. You may wish to have it looked at by a pro. I remember CA is a real stickler on emissions equipment.

Believe me, if it was possible to remove all of the emissions stuff i would, but like you said, california is a stickler on emissions, so i can`t remove any of it.
