got a shortblock

I just bought a short block. I am going to be getting the engnbldr.com complete heads with the crawler cam.

I am looking at what else I should replace while I am at it. I am going to do all the fluids, and the spark plugs. What else should I look at replacing?

Thanks,
Brandon

Oil and water pump, head gasket, head bolts, valve cover gasket, timing chain, tensioner, cap, rotor, plug wires. Check timing cover for wear marks and replace if chain marks are too deep.

Have the alternator and starter checked and replace if nessessary.

If its carbed, why not rebuild the carburetor? Or injectors if EFI? Start off nice and clean.

I paid 700 + 100 core. Checker Auto Parts. I figured that with the time and money to build my own, this was the same.

I've got a parts truck with an '85 carb'd 22r in it. It's going to the junkyard pretty quick, contact me if you want it cheap. It's in north central Iowa (Alexander).

Alright, I ordered my StreetRV head and I am putting together the final parts. The list is as follows for now: water pump, 180 degree thermostat, NGK spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, oil filter. Do you think I should get new rocker arms? They are kinda pricey, starting as low as 13.99/per and up to 26.99/per. They are cast steel, just like the stockers, but everywhere I have read and anyone I have talked to (with the exception of a Toyota guy I work with) says they should be replaced.

I am thinking about getting a new fan, clutch, and shroud. Are there any other parts I should put on the list? Thanks for your help.

I didn't replace the rockers on my rebuild, just the adjustment screws. The rocker pads looked decent and I just cleaned them up good.

All the places I have read say that you should replace them...is that just a scare tactic to get you to spend another 160 bucks?

I've built a few 22R's and never replaced them. As long as the wear on the pads is minimal and consitant you should be fine.

I think the reason they tell you to replace them is to cover their ass. If someone installs a new cam and the lifters are beat up, it will in turn tear up the cam. That's the last thing they want to deal with.

In a perfect world or on a race engine I would say yes. On a semi-stock 22R it's not quite as nessary. I would check to make sure there will be no warranty issue's by using the stock set, you don't want to run into any problems down the road.

well, following my goal for this engine, I will be replacing them. I promised myself not to half ass anything and to replace everything that needed to be. I want it to be perfect and since I am going to be taking care of it, it will last a long time and take a lot of abuse.
