Question gears on an 85 p/u

Just bought my 85 p/u and am going from stock tires to 31's and eventually 33's and was wondering what gears i should switch to and get more power yet decent mileage. I live in a town that has numerous hills, must go up one of many to get anywhere.

I have 33's and 456 gears... pro's - can do 75 on the freeway with decent gas milage con's - not low enough gears for rock crawling and steep hills 3 gear, so ya 488 or 529's I'm going to 529's and 35's asap.

Stock is 4.1 with 29" tires. With 33" tires, you should put in 4.88 if you want the speedo to be accurate. If you want it to drive nicer, you could go as high as 5.29 without problems, other than speedo accuracy.

All that said, I'm running stock gears with my 33's and won't be regearing until I have more funds.

thanks for the info, think i will go with the 4.88s, won't have the money for the 33's until after the 31's wear out

Since you want to go to 33's then you should go ahead with the 4.88 gears. FWIW, 4.56 gears are perfect for most 31" tires.
