A frustrating weekend with 85 4runner!!!
Hello everyone, I just did a timing chain kit with steel guides on my 85
4runner. I have done a timing belt on a 2003 Tacoma and this was just as if not more painfull. Just kidding it wasn't that bad untill the drive home. On the way home I felt that it was too good to be true that it was running fine and as quiet as can be. So I pulled over and there was oil very where!!! I paniced at first but after that I think I pin pointed it to where the timing chain cover and the head meet. During reassembly I checked the gasket and it seemed fine, I also put a little rtv on the cover. Can any one please help me, has this ever happened to anyone else??? I wonder if I didn't tighten the "hidden" bolt under the cam gear enough? Should I remove the bolt and try to get some rtv in the gap? I really, really don't want to do the head gasket!!! If so it may be time for a cam and valve job? I appreciate any help or ideas out there.
Thanks.

did you pull the oil pan?
I have been told that it will never seal unless you pull off the oil pan or the head.
I tossed in a home made gasket made from from the felpro oil pan gasket box. I put in between the head and chain cover since the head gasket part was gone.

I pulled the oil pan off, I have heard of people removing the head but at the time I didn't see a need to? I am interested in rebuilding the motor now after talking with my father in law since he agreed to help me with it. Any advice as to which, if any upgrades to do. I heard that EPN makes some different cams for off roading? Never tore into a motor just looking for some ideas?
