front shackle angle help
#22
im not too sure. when i lift either front wheel, i am bottoming the shock ( i think i show about 2.5" of shock at ride height) on a 12" bilstein 5125. well, the pitman/tre issue prevents that on one side, but its like 1/2" tops. the opposite side is showing 10+" or better. i know these shocks don't measure an exact 12" but damn close. so im not sure then if its the shocks or springs.

in terms of the rear shocks, i still show about 1.5" of shock when it hits the bumpstop and the rear definitively isn't using the full shock length when drooping. i think it was around 9" showing

I have a question- I am lifting a 1983 yota pickup and i am going to remove a few leaf springs from the rear. (front is done). (prevous owner put in extra leaves for a total of 6 spring leaves) i was wandering how many i could take out to still be safe ? i want the truck to be very soft (its not going back on the road, offroad only) but i am not sure how many to take out ? help would be great. I am talking the lift of a wrecked 85 yota i bought but not the springs (they are rusty and crapy). So i want to use the factory springs for now (till i get enough money for better aftermarket springs.

In back, you want to be careful about making the springs too soft of axle wrap will bite you. Went on a run with a guy who had a new-to-him pickup and he was bragging about how much flex he had in back, had pulled out that "silly" overload leaf. Yes, it did flex really nice for stock springs, but about a mile or two into the trail, his springs were bent up into a solid "S" shape and the axle was sitting up against the bump stops. When he made it back home, he got the springs straightened out and put the overload back in.
So take it a leaf at a time, usually pulling one of the shorter bottom leaves and be sure to either keep an overload leaf or add an anti-wrap leaf to the pack to keep it from wrapping on you:

You'll know you are getting wrap if you get a lot of wheel hop in back when taking off hard.

Thanks that helps alot also what kind of shocks and springs would you recomend for the future (i want to turn it into a rock crawler sometime after the lift is in) and what gear ratio do you recomend for rock crawling/ trail riding (im wanting to change that soon also) the truck probally wont reach any spd over 35mph anyway. Just need sometihing to help turn the 33's

This is a great spring thread with solid pics of before and afters...thanks...
What did you end up doing for the pitman arm? Sky has one that's a mild drop:

my front springs, once broken in wound up being a little too soft. i was running almost negative at ride height. i added in a leave from my allpro pack and it mad the stance perfect. the shackle angle isnt as laid back as in the original after-shot.
i didnt do anything with the pitman. after a bunch of testing, it barely touched at full bump and shocks just about bottomed out. so i slightly extended the bump stops so it wouldnt contact anymore.
