Emissions help needed on a 84 Runner
Okay so the other day I went to take my 84 Runner to emissions. (yea, I know what a waste) but anyway I figured I would share with you my results. Well first of all the good thing it that she passed the gas cap test but other than that it's all down hill from there.
It failed the hydrocarbons test, state limit is 2.8000 gpm the runner did 3.6458 gpm.
It failed the carbon monixide test, state limit is 80.000 gpm the runner did 93.2960 gpm.
It barley passed the oxide of nitrogen test, state is 5.8000 gpm the runner did 1.8020 gpm.
The best was the guy trying have her run on the treadmill, when it was all said and done the computer screen said that the vehicle did not have enough power to perform the test. That was to me the funniest. So they gave until August to get it fixed but even then she still won't have it in her to do the treadmill test.
I was actually hoping the tires wouldn't fit but the just made it, so anyone with 33's can still fit on the dyno.
I have checked the timing and have done a full tune up to her.
But anyway just thought it would be nice to share and see if you guys have any suggestions on getting her to pass.
But the one majior thing is that the carb that I have on her the weber 32/36; doesn't have any emissions hooked up so I don't know what to do about that, I just wish the historic rules were for vehicles over 21 not 25, but oh well.
Please I have until August to get her to pass again,

When I got my 84 22r carbed with a bad cat it blew 808 or real close to that the limit here is 227. So I bought a cat and had it installed, tested and blew a 247, dam just missed it. The motor was idleing ruff still and more checking lead me to believe I had a bad EGR, changed that out, took it back. It blew 10. Thats it just 10. So a cat is a big part took it down by like 600 the EGR took it down by about 200.
Also get the cat hot, do not just drive from your house say 5 miles and test it. The cat will not be hot enough to do its job. Drive at least 10-15 miles on a freeway or at freeway speed before you get it tested.
Of course you may have other issues, thats just what mine did.

My 85 4runner (2.4 EFI) failed the Calif test 3 years ago. I had a new cat put on and it passed easily. Last year it barely passed so I'll probably need another one next year. BTW the cat was only about 75 bucks plus labor...good luck.

It has a new egr and had a new cat but from it running so rich i guess there is nothing left inside of it. and the place i went to is like a half an hour away from me so im pretty sure it was hot.

i had an 81 toyota it had a lean misfire i richened up the mixture about a 1/4 turn and it passed with flying colors it helped that i had a mix gas anylyzer to help with the adjustment i'd recomend if you dont want to take it to any one trying a tuneup and puting the highest octane gas in it with an octane booster this is a quick fix i found to fix alot of emisions problems i was emmisions certified out of highschool unless u have an exhast leak this should do the trick

Why would higher octane ans octane booster help it pass? It's good when it comes to the exhaust system has a new one on it including a cat. Some people were saying to put like rubbing alcohol in the tank ans it will absord something ans that will make it pass. But I don't know I am tired of dumping money into getting this thing to pass. And I completely agree with you there intrepid with not being able to figure out something thats wrong and probably is simple at that.

In my post above I was talking about the HC count as that is what I was failing on also. Are all the vac lines that go to the EGR all hooked well. I went from 247 HC to 10 when I changed the EGR.
There is a small pipe, almost like you would see as a water pipe in your house. It hooks to the EGR, then bolts up by the carb. I wounder if that pipe is clogged?
So while I'm new to this motor, I would think the cat is bad or the EGR is not working correctly. Thats why I brought up the vac-lines and that small pipe.
Good spark plugs in there with the correct gap right?
Sounds like the cat should have been hot by them like you say, so if it is good, then it should have been working. New cap and rotor?
Sorry not much help I guess.
