Dist cap ID issue

1985 4X PU 22R
Bought remanufactured distributor from O'Reilly's a couple years ago. Came with cap and rotor. Installed, has worked great. Wanted to do a tune up and OEM Dist cap did not fit, too big and rotor too big also. O'reilly's could not match up. They ordered in another Dist and took the cap off and gave it to me as part of their lifetime warranty. One employee spent some time trying to figure out what Toyota this reman Dist came off but no luck. Said that was all they could do. Not sure what they will do when I want another cap. How can I find what cap this is? Any advice helpful. Thanks.

OReilly employee said they could not find a number. I don't see a # on mine. Have not pulled it to look it over completely though.
Contemplating a trip to a dealer, but not sure they could tell me much.

I've been meaning to post about an issue I've had this year with 22R distributors. It's a long one. Bottom line is I've bought 4 distributors, all of them are not the same as OEM. The vacuum advance ports point in the opposite direction, the caps and rotors are smaller, and the connector wire is routed differently. The first was CarQuest branded I bought from RockAuto in January. I took it to an Advance that use to be CarQuest shop before the buy out. The folks there know me by name. They could not tell me what cap and rotor to order when it came time for a tune up. I missed my return window with RockAuto. I ended up needing to use it a few months ago. It failed in 2 weeks (a spring broke) and I think it chewed up my distributor drive gear. When I first installed it, it took too much force to install it. Once I replaced my distributor drive gear, there was no getting that distributor installed.

So I ordered a Cardone off RockAuto. It matched the CarQuest branded one. Sent it back. Had to eat the shipping charge. Ordered a WEI from OReilly. It matched the CarQuest and Cardone branded ones. Returned the OReilly one. I then ordered one off Amazon where the pics showed the vacuum ports pointing in the right direction. It too matched the others, ports point opposite direction, cap/rotor smaller, and connector routed different.

The only thing I can figure is all these brands are sourcing from the same manufacturer. So either the aftermarket ones that do match OEM are not available and this smaller one is being substituted, or the makers database on the design is fxxked.

I'm currently using an old original Toyota distributor. I've been in touch with a guy about rebuilding the old Toyota 22R distributors.

fishdan does yours look like the one on the left in this pic?

That is definitely the one I have.
Mine has worked fine but knowing this I will start looking for a replacement.

THANK YOU for this information.
