Exclamation click and no bang

Well we just finished the rebuild of my 91 pickup. I got in turned the key and it clicked once and nothing else. So now i am surfing the net looking for possible problems. Any suggestions. Where did I go wrong in the wiring?

Assuming the click was over on the passenger side kick panel area? If so that is the circuit opening relay, it normally clicks, just you can't hear it if the starter is working. So check out why the starter is not working:

Could also be a missing ground strap associated with the engine.

no what i have is the negative battery post hooked up to the solenoid and the positive hooked to a fuse box. the negative line goes direct to the solenoid and through the wiring harness the positive has a single plug that plugs into the solenoid. Is that backwards? should I switch the two around?

The positive battery cable should be hooked to the large lug on the solenoid. The smaller wire that hooks to the solenoid should be hot when the ignition switch is in the start position. As others have said, the starter grounds through the engine block. You should not be hooking the negative battery cable to the solenoid.
The positive battery cable carries all of the juice to turn the starter, the smaller wire activates the solenoid which completes the circuit to make the starter turn.

Ok switched it up. Truck start and runs really rough, which leads me to believe that either i have a timing issue or that i wired the plugs in the wrong order. As far as the plugs go I have them firing 1 3 4 2. when you look at the cap from the left screw 1 then clockwise 3 4 2 is this correct? what else could be the problem?

clockwise around the dist cap- 1 3 4 2, that looks good according to you.
it runs, albeit roughly... but tis a good sign...
now, sorry for doing this, but it's a 91, right...?
let's take it into the proper forum.

Eh, its still a 22RE. Check the timing, the knock sensor, maybe inspect your injectors, the airflow meter, and of course: there's always a vacuum leak.

does it run rough all the time or just when idling? can you hear and vacuum leaks, spray some carb cleaner around some of the vacuum ports and see if it the idle changes. double check all you grounds. maybe check the vacuum going to the fuel regulator. just brain storming here, hope something helps.

Well it was a timing issue. I got it all re timed and now it runs, not right but it runs. Now when I start it I have to hold down the gas keeping it around 2k RPM. It runs smooth then. If I let off the gas it idles hard and shuts down. I am going to check the wiring to see if the injectors are in the correct order. Any other suggestions??

Thanks so far for all of your help.

Oh yea I know Im in the wrong year I was reading other posts and ended up posting here. I thought I was in the correct place but hey its here and I have had more responses here.

X2 on spraying carb cleaner or starting fluid around the intake, plenum, and throttle body. Does it idle any better if you restrict air flow into intake?

Your description of how it runs after the timing sounds a LOT like a vacuum leak... a fairly big one. Maybe not brake booster big, but something larger than just A small vacuum line.

Well I am heading out there now to start pulling off lines and maybe re routing some. I would love to find a diagram of how they should be. None of the parts shops in my area have the model year manual so Ill have to keep looking for one or maybe e-bay it. I am kinda hoping that someone on here has one and would be willing to e-mail it to me.

Thanks

ok vacuum lines re routed in the correct order. Now here is the issue, there is always something isnt there. So The truck starts up great runs fine for a couple of blocks then shuts down. It rolls over but not like it should. Battery was fully charged but Im thinking it could be the charging system?? Any other suggestions?

The temp is low. Just at the first mark. In the beginning of the day it starts up fine and runs for about 5 miles then the idle drops off and it wants to die. Once it dies it starts hard. So ant ideas??

this may be a long shot but what if you tried unplugging the TPS and see if it runs better. just a thought.
