Ever thought of a ford v6 swap? The 4.0L are the most popular v6's in the ranger/explorer/bronco world. 170hp sounds like a good bit and around here, Its 10 times easier to find complete 4.0L donor vehicles. I really wouldnt trust the transmittion from a ford. I heard that the 22r trans are rated at 150hp and arent any good over that. Do they make adapters for toy and chevy trans to go on fords? How do you think the wiring would turn out for a 4.0L?
Know anyone who has attempted this yet?

After I piece together all that I will need, He might be interested in selling engine parts. Right now he has a few 350 blocks. V8's are just to darn expensive to build though....

Adapters

I would stick with the chevy toy conversion. Fords are not worth crap!!!

I know they sell adapters to mount a Toy T-case to a C4, AOD, T-18, NP435, and even the Jeep NV 3550. So if your ford motor has one of those trannies then your toy t-case will adapt.

yeah my experience with fords has been a bad one, though the ford taurus is a nice car. and the F150 is nice... for a toy. doubt it could stand up to real work. but i still wonder something... a lot of people here are quick to badmouth chevys, but everyone still does chevy engine swaps, chevy springs, axles, etc. kinda tells ya something huh? frankly id rather have my 22re in my truck than a chevy motor, but i may go to a V6 someday. keep us posted this is a gr8 thread!

22re

I am not a Ford fan, cause I had to work on then at some point in my life. Maybe I am jaded cause it was just this one Ranger that always gave me problems.

I loved my 22RE, probably one of the best and most reliable motors ever made. With my growing tires, and weight of the trail armor, passengers (she's not ever gonna lose that weight), I needed more power. If I wanted to squeeze another 50 horses out of the 22RE, I would have to modify it heavily, thus lose its reliability. The cost, I have talked to LC, would be more than my expence on the 4.3 (which was about $1800 total cost).

I love my 4.3 Chevota, I also have no problems with my 91 s-10 truck (its only got 90k on it though).

Whatever you guys do, is cool by me. I seems a chevy swap would be the best, cause its tried and tru. I have seen a few 5.0 conversions, but they are fords.

Good luck

that & the fact that chevy parts are waaaaay more interchangeable than any thing the blue oval ever put out ! oh yea gm motors are a lot cheaper to build than foerds as well ! why do you think theres more aftermarket support for chevy than ford ? sorry for the hijack, regular programming will now continue !!!

Ok, I just got back from that guys house and he has a 1994 caprice with 80k miles on it and said If I pulled the engine I could have it.
It is the chevy 265, 4.3L v8. Ive been searching for aftermarket parts but cant find very much for this model. He did tell me that very few parts are transferable from other engines because these were designed with a different coolant route through the heads and block compared to the 350's.
What do you think about this motor? It wouldnt require a rebuild, just some updated things. I was a little hesitant because of the computer also. Chevy people help me out! Are these engines common? or should I wait and get another one.

4.3 V8

These were most commonly found in the Caprice 94-96. There is not much on the market for them, as far as aftermarket. What about the tranny ? I don't know much about the motor is it 90 deg or 60 deg ? You could use it, if you had the harness, motor, emissions equipment, the tranny (4l60 or 700R4 hopefully for the adapter). I personally would try to find the 4.3 262 V6, being more common with lots of aftermarket parts, and less guesswork.

Here are some years to look for. This isn't a complete list, I tried to eliminate the bad years wether it be the motor, cpu, or tranny mated to it. I cannot stress enough about finding a full donor.

I would forget about the 4.3 V8 and either go with the 4.3 V6 or move on up to the 5.7 V8. If you are going to go to the trouble to shoehorn a V8 in there, make it worth your while and go with the one that has the most options for the future. Both the 4.3 V6 and the 5.7 V8 have tons of after market support, including adapter kits to make them fit in your vehicle.

Very informative 4runnerchevy!
Friend of mine mention to me " If your going through all that trouble to swap in an engine, why not go with a v8?"
I havent really looked at it this way. Are the 350's a whole new world of problems and modifications compared to the 4.3l?

Bell Housing

If your going to run a 4.3 with the Toy w56 r150 151 then you will need the adapter bell housing, clutch, modified fork, slave, etc.

Keep in mind that the 90 deg 4.3 is the same as the small block in relation to the rear of the motor.

If you price it all out, it costs about the same to use the Toy manual tranny as it is to use the GM auto. Advance adapters does sell a conversion manual, as well as Downey.

if i was going to swap another motor i would put in a LS1!!! i have one in my toyota and it's fun you have the power there when you need it. my wife has a 02' blazer with a 4.3 and it's slow as a turd. i wouldn't even bother with that motor. i picked my motor up from American junk yards in Fontana CA for $1,000, that was motor tranny and wiring harness with computer. and a friend up in apple valley did the hole wiring harness for $1,200, that was to make everything legit in California, and he came down helped me install it.
