Chevy motor swap.

I will be getting a 4runner if not soon then alot sooner. Ive read quite a few articles about chevy engine and th3 ford 289/302 being put in these things.
I have a friend that works for a chevy dealer in the mechanics department and he always brings home front and rear ends, trans, engines, engine parts......
Would swapping in a 3.0L or 3.4L be the same ammount of trouble as swapping in a small chevy v6?

What about the mid 80's supra engines. The 2.8L v6. Ive read that they are 155-175hp depending on year.

The 4.3 is easier to wire and use al little as possible to make run. It makes good power and tourqe is nice and powerfull great for wheeling. the supra motors and 3.4's make good HP but lack a bit in the tourqe that the 4.3 has. Ide say 4.3 aspecialy since you can do it cheap

Motors

I have done the 2.8, 3.0 supras. Inline six gets tricky. Go with a 4.3 CPI or even better a TPI. 200 horses is plenty.

Ford 302 from Mustang GT would be wild but hard on stock drive train. Plus is distributor is up front, parts are cheap and engine is smaller than chevy. The Chevy 4.3 is a hauss as well and more adapter parts are available.

If money is no issue, and Isuzu turbo diesel would be sweet and thrifty.

I am planning a 4.3 swap in the future. I already have the 4.3 engine w/ a 4L60-E tranny which is recommended since the stock tranny was designed for no more than 150 hp. I got mine out of a Chevy Astro Van that I got pretty cheap.

By "Isuzu Turbo Diesel" are referring to the "Chevy" Duramax?

put a blown, alky fed, nitrous breathing 502 in it

...then break everything...

alot ppl here do 3.4's and 4.3's. Some do 4tb diesel, and some do 350 chevy's(like i'm doing), others do straight six's.

It's all budget, and i feel it has a bit to do with how willing you are to mess with problems, ie swapping pains. 3.4 & 4.3 are safe, tried & true bets though. Do some research, there are write ups i believe with both engines.

Either way, Good Luck & welcome to the forums!

toyotaman11 >>>> I've read that the manual tran's can old up to the 3.4's, & should to the 4.3 if i remember correctly. They can even take some abuse from v8's, though don't expect it to last long. I don't see why you couldn't run the 4.3 w/o a problem. You have to remember, alot of problems are self enduced(sp?). You could brake any trans if you abuse the crap out of it, vise versa, i could make a T5 hold up forever... get what i'm saying?? I've got a spare R150F and xfer case though if you want. *cough* NV4500 *cough*

Manual trans and the 4.3

The manual trans will hold up to around 250 HP. I personally like the 700R4 mated to the 4.3, for rock crawling.

I'm going to perform a 4.3 swap in the next six moths..... Going a different route than others, I will be using a tbi out of an Astro van mated to a t5 trans and dana 300 transfer case. THe reason you ask??? The 4.3 has the same bolt pattern as the t5 bellhousing, and the dana 300 is passenger side drop like my toy case. On top of that my dad gave me his 88 Astro for free and my brother gave me the dana 300 case and t5 trans. I will start a thread when I get going on this project.

I know jeep parts in a toyota

I am going to use the ecu out of the astro van........ Plenty of adapter to use- try Downey Offroad, Advance Adapters, etc etc...

4.3

You can use the 300 xfer case. You will need hybrid drive lines, and fab a new crossmember. I personally like the options a toyota case gives you (gears, doubler). I already had a built toy case before my swap so, stuck with the Toyota case. Even if you use the Toyota T-case with adapter, you will need driveshaft mods.

Downey, Advance adapters (the best), and NWOR all cary adapters for the t-case or the Toy manual tranny.
