Unhappy check engine light

I have looked brifely for a post on this but need to go to work and am running out of time this morning. I just rebuilt the 22RE in my Father in Laws 1985 truck and got it running a few days ago. Sounds good but have a few small problems. After running for a bit the check engine light comes on and I would like to know how to retrieve the codes. Second I went to time it and I disconnected what I belive to be the T connector on the left side of the engine compartment, it was in a rubber dummy plug housing next to another larger circular plug. I shorted the two prongs but there was no change in timing. I tried to set it at 5 degrees and drive it but it ran very strange, if I barely pushed on the throttle it seemed to run good but the instant I pushed the throttle down farther it bogged way down and had no power. If anyone can help I am very thankful ahead of time. Or if someone couls point me to some post I would appreciate that to, Thanks, Travis.

Thank you for the site reference. I realized the knock sensor was unplugged after I got codes 11 and 12. I pluged the sensor in and still get the same codes. Do I need to reset the computer some how? Also I tried to time it again with the T connector shorted and I set it at 5-6 degrees, pulled the jumper and it ran exactly the same as with the jumper in. I dont have access to FSM, can anyone help me? Also code 11 says it can be a number of different things possibly. Am I going to need a FSM to diagnose properly?

If i remember right, code 11 is the TPS, it could be bad or out of adjustment.

well I found a fsm online and downloaded it so when I have time I will check the TPS. This truck ran good before the engine was pulled for rebuild b ut I know things can go bad while sitting. I just dont understand the timing thing, should I hear a change in the engine when the T connector is shorted as opposed to open or not neccessarily? And Visibly whith my timing light there is no change of the mark on the pulley in reference to the degree indicator.

Exclamation

Okay so I tested the TPS. I have 810 OHMS at closed throttle accross VTA to E2, and infinte across IDL-E2 at all positions including .022 and .0335. At WOT I am at 4.400 OHMS again across VTA and E2. my outer loop resistance falls into the accepted range also. I am seeing a bad TPS in my opinion and I called for a replacement and WOW I am still stunned at the cost of a new one!!! Has anyone found a good outlet for these that doesn't cost an arm and a leg? Also I have a 89452-28010 ND1098500-0100 numbered sensor. I see a few on eBay with similar but not exact numbers. Do they have to be identical or does anyone know if there is a range that I fall in that will work? Thanks again and that Web Site is wonderful, Thanks again!!!!
