carb problem( help.)

hi guys was wondering if any one could shed any light on my running problem,i own a 1984 2.0ltr petrol 1st gen surf,im having problems with what seems like fuel starvation, but its not.i think the auto choke is playing up and was wondering if any one has come across this problem and has a fix for it.the engine starts and runs fine, everything works ok,but when it gets hot you touch the throttle pedal and the engine starts to cough and splutter and the revs wont pick up.the engine idles fine no problem at all and purrs like a kitten.if you hold the choke flap slightly shut it picks up and starts to run fine.but the moment you let it go it splutters again and wont pick up.ive had the carb in bits and cleaned everything out and checked all the vac hoses.fuel line etc.now the other problem is it doesnt allways do it.its one of those damn intermitent faults and its really annoying because you just cant trust it not to brake down on you.ive heard there is a weber 32/36 twin choke conversion for this engine can anyone shed any light on this also please.(and if it helps the engine is fitted with all the US emmission stuff,EGR valve and associated bits and pieces.)many thanks in advance.heres a pic

Is the choke properly adjusted? Maybe you have a vacuum leak... those carburetors have a thousand hoses coming from the intake area. Maybe the vacuum advance in the distributor has gone out? I don't know if PCV would be a problem but its very easy to check that valve. Also there's several other little vacuum gizmos hanging around the carburetor. Best check and see if they all work properly?

Check the aap, if its bad it will run good when the engine is cold/choke on, but when the engine warms up and the choke kicks off it will run bad. pull the vacuum line off the aap, if you see fuel in the vacuum line then thats your problem. replace the aap diaphragm and that will fix your problem.

cheers i'll try that where is the aap is it the big square looking diaghram on the rear of the carb next to the accelerator pump diaphram.should the engine revs die as soon as you take your foot off of the throttle or should it take a few seconds to die back down to idle???it seems to rev away when you change gear but eventually idles.

The aap is on the valve cover side of the carb, directly across from the accelerator pump, it has three screws holding it to the carb and a vacuum line comming off of it.
