Auto hubs stuck in 4WD

Hey everyone,

In my search I could only find answers to manual hubs. I've been driving in reverse like an idiot and my auto locking hubs aren't disengaging. I just rebuilt the knuckles, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I had a hell of a time getting the axle back in so I was trying what I could to get it to line up. Is there a trick to getting these hubs out of 4WD?

1985 Toyota SR5 manual trans with auto locking hubs

Thank you!

Well, lol, you're supposed to be able to drive in reverse! Are you sure you put the hubs back in correctly? The bad thing about those style hubs was they had a tendency to disengage. I blew mine apart rocking back and forth in a mud pit. It is easy to convert to manual and I would recommend that.

Haha true. I'm pretty sure I did. There was a cutout area that fits the spring/coil (clutch?) piece (I apologize I don't know the terminology). The hub wouldn't go back in any other way. I'm totally going to change them out when I can. I'm just trying to get it out of 4WD so I can get it smogged to then be able to drive it to where I am moving in 3 weeks. Is there anything you can recommend me trying to disengage it? If I took the hub apart again, is there a way to manually disengage it? Thank you for responding

I guess you could just take the hub dial off and gut the internals. Then put the hub cover back on.
